MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK IS UPON US

We are just days away from what once again promises to be another great season of New York Fashion Week.   On February 9th through February 16th,  well-known and emerging designers will come together across the city and within the Lincoln Center venue to show their Fall/Winter 2012 Collections in front of an audience of buyers, fashion critics, industry professionals, fashion media, celebrities, models and more.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is an IMG-Event.

This marks the 99th year as we celebrate USA Track and Field’s 2012 Visa Championship Series.

The victorious winners of the evening seemed to be the athletes of the United States  and Jamaica who were shining in many of the major competitions.  Some of those winners include Lolo Jones, Terrence Trammell ,Ryan Whiting, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Asafa Powell.

Jones beat a deep field in the 50-meter hurdles in the U.S. Open at Madison Square Garden. She finished in 6.78 seconds to hold off Britain’s Tiffany Porter.

“I was such a mental mess the night before,” she said. “Just thinking, ‘Am I healed from surgery? Am I fit? Am I in shape?’ Just to have this one under my belt and with such a tough field — it’s just a sigh of relief that all that hard work paid off.”

The heavy favorite in the 100 hurdles at the 2008 Olympics, Jones clipped the ninth hurdle, shattering her gold medal hopes in an instant. Before she could even dream about redemption at this summer’s London Games, she had to get back on the track. The 29-year-old Jones had surgery in August to fix a tethered spinal cord.

In the first few months afterward, when various parts of her body would hurt, Jones would “freak out” and fret to her doctor: “The surgery didn’t work. My career is ruined.”

“Typical athlete,” she said. “But he’s just like, ‘Calm down. Your body’s adjusting.’ And sure enough, after a week, things would go back to normal.”

The Jamaicans swept the 50 dashes in a customary show of strength. Former 100 world-record holder Asafa Powell edged countryman Nesta Carter in the men’s race, winning in 5.64 seconds.

This is the first time since 2004 that Powell has raced indoors, as he tries a different approach after years of disappointments at major championships. Always a fast starter, Powell was right at home at the especially short distance, 10 meters less than the normal indoor 60.

“As soon as I got out of the starting block, the race was over,” he said.

Veronica Campbell-Brown easily won the women’s 50 in 6.08 seconds. She is seeking to become the first woman to win three straight Olympic gold medals in the 200.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” Campbell-Brown said of Saturday’s victory. “Each race is preparation for what is to come this summer.”

Earlier, 22-year-old Silas Kiplagat showed he had learned well from 37-year-old Bernard Lagat. The Kenyan won the mile, beating the man who had dominated at that distance in the Garden.

Kiplagat, the silver medalist in the 1,500 last summer in the world championships, overtook the American with just under a lap to go and won in 4:00.65. Lagat was 0.27 seconds back.

Lagat won the Wanamaker Mile in the Millrose Games at the Garden a record eight times before finishing second last year. The 2007 world champion in the 1,500, the Kenyan-born Lagat now focuses on the 5,000.

“I feel like I was strong the entire way. The thing I take from this is I’m really ready now” to train to run a fast 5,000, Lagat said.

Kiplagat and other young Kenyan runners were in elementary school when Lagat won his first Olympic medal in 2000 and still look up to him. So Kiplagat was grateful for tactical advice Lagat gave him before the world meet in South Korea.

The Millrose Games moved uptown to the Armory after nearly a century at the Garden, with the USA Track & Field-sponsored Open taking over the space.

Reigning world champion Jesse Williams of the United States won the high jump in 7 feet, 6 inches. American Terrence Trammell, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, won the men’s 50 hurdles. Ryan Whiting of the U.S. was first in the shot put with a throw of 69-5¼.

‘There is no better ship than friendship’. We look back upon 2011 as a tough economic year for the history books but look ahead with a sense of optimism at the year ahead of us, 2012.

Moderate temperatures in the low 50′s brought a crowd of excited partygoers to the streets of Times Square early in the day on Saturday, December 31st, to await the welcome of a bright new year. You could easily find representation in Times Square from countries as far away as London, England and Beijing, China. A very upbeat group of girls decided to make a road trip from Dallas to ‘The Big Apple’ to herald in the New Year amongst the massive throngs of people only to head back home once the clock struck midnight.

People lined the streets and filled the barricaded areas with not an empty space to be found. As day turned into evening, blue balloons and matching Nivea ‘Dare to be Kissed’ hats could be spotted for blocks with a hint of confetti dotting the skies like snowflakes of winter in the night sky.

The festivities opened with a special presentation from Beijing, China’s municipal government and a traditional and colorful Chinese lion dance. The crystal balls at Times Square emitted red and yellow light to signify fortune and good luck in the coming year as part of a Chinese cultural tradition. This was a promising symbol of better cultural relations between the two countries.

A smiling and animated Ryan Seacrest, synonymous with New Year’s Eve in Times Square, walked into the crowd early in the evening to greet his fans and followers as they reached out for a hug and a picture to remember. Also cheering in a brighter year was Carson Daly, Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin.

Excitement filled the brisk air as the celebrity couple, Bill and Giuliana Rancic, dominated the stage at intervals. They shared conversation with the crowd, read resolutions from visitors who dropped their wishes in a ball at the Times Square Visitors Center and a surprise engagement took place as a Florida couple made their way to the stage. The proposal was broadcast live on the Toshiba big screen in Times Square. Sponsors for this event included Nivea, Philips, Waterford Crystal, Toshiba and Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark. This year was the 104th anniversary of the historic ball drop.

You could feel the thrill and excitement of this special evening as you glanced up at all the billboards that lit up the night and the star of the evening, the ‘crystal-paneled’ ball, 400 feet above the street and decorated with 3,000 Waterford crystal triangles. A remembrance of those we lost on 9/11 took place for a brief moment since this past year marked the ten-year anniversary.

An unlikely couple, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Lady Gaga, shared a kiss at midnight as the big ball dropped and then they took to the dance floor to none other than ‘Auld Lang Syne’ which led into ‘New York, New York’. We were all caught up in this New York moment.

Celebrations took place all across the world at different historic moments that signal in 2012 and fireworks lit up the night.




As quickly as New Year’s Eve came, the day was over but we are eagerly opening the curtain this morning to a new and brighter today, 2012, with most of our troops back home, an election year and hopefully a healing economy in our near future.

A wedding is one of the most anticipated experiences in life. It requires extensive preparation and planning in order to make it a memorable event. While exciting and gratifying, it can also be extremely stressful.

There is one wedding planner who has catapulted the ladder of success in the world of wedding planning to become a name synonymous with customized and imaginative. Her name is Ana Cruz, Style Network’s TV Host and Celebrity Wedding Planner.

Ana’s story is an interesting one. Ana’s life ambition was to become a teacher. She put herself through school while working for a corporation as an event planner. In 2010, Cruz was the genius behind the Earl Cole (winner of the 2007 season of the Survivor Show) wedding. It became a battle of the event elements pitting the groom against the bride. The wedding was televised on The Style Network and Ana Cruz did a fabulous job thus giving her even more widespread recognition.

One of her most notable wedding experiences was when she was chosen by a bride and groom who were very indecisive and couldn’t come up with a theme, therefore calling on Ana Cruz to assist them. Cruz grabbed the reins and ended up planning around an Asian disco theme which was a terrific learning experience and giving her two very satisfied customers.

Word has traveled fast and she is one of the most desired planners in the world of events. She is featured on the E! Network’s reality destination wedding series, “Married Away”. Cruz planned a destination wedding for a Boca Raton, Florida couple who ended up getting married in Chile. Today she appears regularly as a popular event planning consultant on local radio, television and news media outlets and played a large role in the recent Miami Beach International Bridal Week with the bridal boot camp. She is popular on I-Tunes and watched in over 83 million households. Cruz has clients all over the world although her home base is Miami, a destination very popular for brides and grooms to get married and a selling feature for her business. She caters to custom weddings making herself available to travel with the lucky couple to ensure that the wedding is perfect in every sense of the word, going as far as Mexico and Chile.

Her clients continue to use her services generation after generation, one family having her plan seven weddings over the course of a number of years.

Cruz has now branched out to offer a clothing line in good fun on the web called ‘Born 2 Wed’ which launches officially in 2012. It capitalizes on the biker theme which has become the rage lately bringing a more edgy feel to the wide world of weddings. Ana Cruz has another venture in the works under wraps at the moment soon to become a reality.

Rania Hatoum is a young and culturally diverse designer with roots in Egypt and China. She is vivacious and extremely creative and knows exactly what her clients are envisioning in their dream dress. Recently, Rania Hatoum was one of the designers featured at Miami Beach International Bridal Week. After having a successful showing at New York International Bridal Week and a private showing at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando, Florida, this latest preview was bound to be just as successful. Her fashions target the modern and sophisticated bride with lightly beaded dresses that are simple yet aristocratic.

Each collection requires a minimum of six months of planning and preparation. This Spring 2012 Collection is appropriately labeled ‘Once Upon a Time‘. As we step out of 2011 and into 2012, Rania Hatoum is seeking to get into the Asian and Middle-Eastern market and introduce her collections worldwide to brides across the globe.

Started 26 years ago by Eileen Fisher herself, the goal was to make dressing easy and effortless with quality designed clothing having sophistication and sustainability. In Palm Beach County in Florida, there are currently 50 girls enrolled in the program. The average age is 15.4 years old and each girl takes part in the program for a 12-18 month period after which time she goes out with the knowledge and confidence she has obtained and embraces her future to the fullest. She is followed by PACE for 3 years upon leaving, a crucial time in her life to apply all the lessons she has learned and live by them. This organization is sponsored by Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, The School District of Palm Beach County and United Way of Palm Beach County. One of the exciting rewards of the program is what the community and businesses give back like the the Florida Association of Women’s Lawyers sponsoring a holiday party for the girls and PeterMark Salon of Delray Beach offering to provide styling for the girls for the event at no cost. There are many businesses eagerly willing to support this great organization to make a difference in a young girl’s life.


The fashion show on Saturday the 19th intimately took place within the Eileen Fisher store amidst all the gorgeous styles of the season. This show was even more special because 2 of the models were part of the PACE board and the other 2 models were girls enrolled in the local program. Styles were absolutely enticing on each and every model. The black sequined scoop neck tank dress is the right choice for the party of the season. Cardigans were popular with ruffles and a drape front paired with skinny ankle jeans or the slim ankle pant. A stunning mandarin collar boxy shirt in maple oak silk was elegant over a pair of straight pants with side zip. A cranberry bateau neck dress is the perfect winter must-have for work and for play. Eileen Fisher is strong on the scarf as the accessory to go with any outfit and they were shown worn in a wide variety of ways in versatile colors, some with sequins for the holidays. A quick draping lesson was given at the end of the show.


The audience was thrilled and anxious to shop for the looks from the show with the enticement of $25 off their purchases and 10% of the proceeds going to PACE Center for Girls. Refreshments and cookies were served and the winners of the day were the models that took part in the event with big smiles for a successful day full of fashion and philanthrophy.

One of the great aspects of the recent DEMA Dive Show 2011 was the awareness that it brought to life through organizations fighting to save our marine ecosystems.

The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) is a non-profit organization working diligently to save our coral reef communities. Most of us take the splendor of our oceans for granted but some well-known facts are not always evident. Coral reefs are Earth’s largest biological structures. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is visible from space. Reefs are formed very slowly over a long period of time and live in groups called colonies. Today’s reefs are 5,000 to 10,000 years old. You can find them in over 100 countries around the world. There is an amazing biodiversity held in coral reefs. Surprisingly enough, even though they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, they support 25% of our marine life. They are a source of food, income and coastal protection for a billion people as well as supply chemical compounds that give us life-saving medicines.

This small but powerful group began as a grassroots alliance of concerned divers that has now grown into an international organization working to unite communities to save coral reefs. CORAL has made such a huge impact on the marine community and with villagers across the globe through their educational and awareness efforts. The latest initiative is concentrated on one of the top 10 dive destinations in the world, Fiji. Taking us back 100 years ago with exquisite reefs, this area of natural innocence and sheer beauty draws in millions of divers per year. The reefs are still very healthy and it is crucial to keep them as such. However, because Fiji is strategically located as a halfway point for the shipping and fishing industry, shark fishing is becoming a major threat to the ecosystem. Sharks are necessary in the marine food chain and the preservation of our reefs. CORAL, working in partnership with the Pew Environment Group and the Fijian Ministry of Fisheries, is raising awareness for shark protection in Fiji through an exciting shark conservation campaign. The goal is to establish a shark sanctuary that would prohibit the commercial fishing of sharks and maintain healthy reefs. The villagers of Fiji hold a magical closeness to sharks, believing that they are descendants of the fish so the feedback has been nothing short of positive.

Village Chiefs are working with CORAL, Pew and the Fiji Ministry of Fisheries to educate and spread the word. A very touching video-Shark Hope- was produced in partnership with a local Fijian film company to educate the local community about the importance of shark conservation. As the clock continues to tick, it is imperative for action to be taken now before it is too late. It takes 2000 sharks to get one ton of shark fin and now fishermen are also going for the tuna. This must be stopped. This campaign is getting the message across and raising local awareness. Momentum is building and now it is just a matter of the Fiji Government Ministries to make the decision to pass the bill and officially declare the area a shark sanctuary.

One of the successes that has come out of CORAL’s conservation work in Fiji is the establishment of a user fee system for the Namena Marine Reserve. CORAL has helped the local community invest funds generated from its marine park to bring tangible benefits to the local community. Revenue is used towards management costs for security, scholarships to educate the community and protecting the reef training. Tourists eagerly flock to the area to dive these marine-filled seascapes so it is a win-win situation for all.

Rick MacPherson, Conservation Program Director for CORAL, looks back to one of the most rewarding experiences for him in this giant endeavor. He has met and partnered with so many wonderful people, getting down to the real community level and one of the villages near and dear to his heart is Kiobo. On one of his recent visits, the villagers greeted him with “Welcome Home”. What could be better than that to feel that oneness with the community that you are working with in order to make a difference?

The three largest threats to our coral reefs and claiming approximately 20% of the reefs on the planet are the following:
Coastal development due to our increasing population which in turn triggers waste production and overfishing endangering water quality and lastly and perhaps the biggest threat is the global warming problem. We are putting excess carbon into the atmosphere and ocean waters are becoming more acidic. When the water temperatures are elevated, this leads to coral bleaching which in turn triggers stress and ultimately over time will cause mortality. We must all take an aggressive stand to actively communicate and get the word out. There is no time to waste. If you are an avid diver, educate dive operators wherever your travels may take you. A global alliance with countries is definitely a must.

There is nothing that could stop this magnificent day from becoming a reality and living out the dream that a prominent civil rights leader began years ago but whose life was needlessly and drastically cut short.

On Sunday, October 16th, 2011, President Obama along with some of the family of Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as with thousands of anxious and exhilarated attendees some of who came out at 5:00 A.M., unveiled and dedicated the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in an emotional ceremony on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  A rendition of the African-American anthem, ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ was played as a large screen in the background flashed Obama the night he won the 2008 Presidential election.

The legacy of this activist was honored by such highly bestowed individuals as the talented Aretha Franklin, poet Nikki Giovanni, the great Stevie Wonder, the passionate actress Cicely Tyson and the ardent Rev. Al Sharpton.

The towering statue stands 30 feet high as a proclamation that change is not simple or quick and persistence and determination pay off but are not without controversy.

The President and First Lady were joined by Vice President Biden and his wife along with the civil rights figures.  This memorial is a first to a black man on the National Mall and its parks.  Obama was only 6 years old when King was assassinated in 1968.  The President gave credit to King for paving his way to the White House and making his dream possible.  The President left signed copies of his inaugural speech and 2008 convention address in a time capsule at the monument site.

This monument has been 15 years in the making.

Obama found much significance in the teachings of King as an iconic leader.  America can live up to its ideals.  Believe that and go forward.  See your adversaries as King did and assume the best in each other.  Social change is ongoing.  Obama urged Americans to harness the energy of the civil rights movement for today’s challenges and remain committed to peaceful resistance just as King had.

The famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech which stood for all Martin Luther King Jr. believed in propelled his spirit into the lives of the American public, created the passing of the landmark Civil Rights Act in 1964 and at the age of 35, King was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.  His assassination in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee at a Sanitation Workers Strike fueled the passion of others who shared his dreams and beliefs and carried them feverishly into the present.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, son and sister all spoke with a fervor, conviction and deep remembrance for a great man.

We are still fighting social and economic unrest and upheaval but…………

As the morning progressed into the afternoon, a joint press conference was held in the East Room of the White House at 12:20 P.M.

Just one day prior to this meeting, the Congress approved a free-trade agreement between the United States and South Korea. This is a significant accomplishment because not only will it create more jobs in the United States (more than 70,000) but it strengthens ties with South Korea and promotes a strong alliance with that country. It will expand mutual investments into both countries. It will increase American manufacturing exports, open Korea’s lucrative services market and level the playing field for our American auto workers. Just as we Americans buy Kias and Hyundias, perhaps now the South Koreans will buy Chevys and Fords. New doors will be opened and the possibilities could be endless.

During the conference, a question and answer period was opened up to press and media from all parts of the world. Topics covered were the situation with North Korea, the Iranian terror plot, the gas line pipeline project and President Obama’s initiative, the American Jobs Act.

Both Presidents hold a strong allegiance to the initiative to resume talks with North Korea on denuclearization.

The United States and South Korea are also working together on climate change and economic issues through the G20 and a nuclear summit scheduled for next year in March in Seoul.

Both countries embrace the responsibilities of leadership in the 21st century, promoting democracy and human rights. South Korea has overwhelmingly supported the reconstruction in Afghanistan as well as the hand-off of security back to the people of Afghanistan. South Korea also shares a common interest in the economic development of Libya along with vocational training for young people there; providing medical care and rebuilding and reinvesting in its infrastructure.

Lee was the first South Korean leader in 13 years to address a joint meeting of the Congress.


To cap off the day, there was a State Dinner attended by such honorable guests which included the Vice President, Deputy Secretary of State, U.S. Representatives, Press Secretary, mayors, Chiefs of Staff and more distinguished guests. Much preparation went into making sure the evening was a success. Singer Janelle Monae performed for the guests later in the evening. First Lady Michelle Obama wore a stunning one-shouldered deep purple gown designed by Doo-Ri Chung, a South Korean designer residing in the United States.

Frans Lanting

In the pursuit of his work, Frans Lanting has lived in trees with wild macaws, camped with giant tortoises inside a volcanic crater, and documented never-before-photographed wildlife and tribal traditions in Madagascar. The Dutch-born, California-based photographer has traveled to Botswana’s Okavango Delta, the rain forests of Borneo and the home of emperor penguins in Antarctica.

The result of his efforts is a startling collection of some of the most beautiful moments ever captured of nature. His photographs have also brought much-needed attention to endangered species and ecological crises throughout the world and in 2001, HRH Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands inducted Lanting as a Knight in the Royal Order of the Golden Ark, the country’s highest conservation honor — just one of many honors he has received throughout his illustrious career.

Thomas Mangelsen

With his formative years spent along the banks of the Platte River in Nebraska hunting and fishing, Tom Mangelsen’s understanding of the natural world stems from a childhood rich in outdoor adventures. Handcrafting his first frames with his brother David in their garage, he opened his first gallery in Jackson, Wyoming in 1978, featuring signed, limited edition prints in the tradition of wildlife artists such as Owen Gromme, an early mentor.

Tom’s photos are available through numerous galleries throughout the U.S. In 1994, he was named “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” by the BBC and the North American Nature Photographer’s “Outstanding Nature Photographer of the Year” in 2000. His photographs have illustrated more than twenty books for children and young adults and have been published in Audubon, National Geographic, National Wildlife, and many others. Tom has published four fine art books including “The Natural World,” based exclusively on his work in the panoramic format.

Art Wolfe has worked on every continent and in hundreds of locations. His stunning images interpret and record the world’s fast-disappearing wildlife, landscapes and native cultures, and are a lasting inspiration to those who seek to preserve them all. The competition is now officially underway. On September 30th, the committee tasked with building a permanent memorial at the United Nations in honor of the victims of slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade launched a global competition for the design of the structure that will signify a permanent reminder of the persecution of the African slaves. This memorial will not only be a constant reminder but will also serve as a teaching mechanism for generations to come.

In charge of this competition will be the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and chairing the committee will be Ambassador Raymond Wolfe of Jamaica.

It is estimated that it will take $4.5 million to build the monument. At this time, just over $1 million has been raised through donations from states and other sources. The Ambassador hopes that contributions will continue to come in from corporations, philanthropists and the private sector.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham kicked off his tenth annual “Take Your Man to the Doctor” campaign—a call to action for men of all ages, ethnicities, and economic levels to regularly visit a doctor, and for the women and men who love them to help make it happen. Participating Brooklyn hospitals, clinics and healthcare professionals offered free flu shots, HIV testing, exercise demonstrations, health screenings for asthma, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, glucose, glaucoma and other conditions, and made important health information available in and around Borough Hall Plaza.

BP Markowitz was joined by Brooklyn newlyweds Alex and Tanesha Vedrine of Mill Basin, who were planning their wedding last year when Alex—just 24 years old at the time and a non-smoker—was diagnosed with Stage IV NSCLC lung cancer. The couple is spreading the word about the importance of routine doctor visits and health screenings, as well as raising awareness of lung cancer. “Take your man to the doctor—that means your husband, your father, your brother, your son, your uncle, your friend or your significant other,” said BP Markowitz. “We don’t care how you do it. Nag him, drag him, cajole him, entice him—just get him to go. Remember, if you do, he will live to love you longer,” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report Health, United States, 2010, men ages 18-44 years represented about 20 percent fewer visits to a primary care generalist than women. The report also indicates that men were twice as likely not to have a usual source of health care, as compared to women.

Ms. Toscano began performing in talent shows when she was four, and by the time she was nine, had performed in a local church production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Ms. Toscano attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City and graduated in 2006. She is best known for her recent success in the tenth season of American Idol, where she quickly became a fan-favorite and placed ninth overall.

The Columbus Day Parade is a fun filled Parade that gets bigger and better every year. Participants from all over the world march in our Parade with pride. The Columbus Day Parade has become a globally televised event with millions of viewers and over a half million spectators on the streets. We invite you to join us and experience this memorable day.

Our Parade Committee has spent countless hours reviewing many talented Bands and entertaining acts in an effort to make this year’s Columbus Day Parade the most exciting Parade yet! We are inviting everyone to come out and line the streets of 5th Avenue in what promises to be a fun filled day. This is already a special year for us, as we have invited and received confirmation from some of the most talented performers. Pia Toscano (American Idol Favorite) as well as the Italian Musical, “The Italian Fairy” are just some of the notable performers. The Sacred Heart University Marching Band as well as Stony Brook University Marching Band will be just a few of our new and exciting musical acts in the Parade. This year, the Parade will be marching up Fifth Avenue from 44th to 72nd Street. The grandstands will be located on Fifth Avenue between 67th and 69th Streets.

The parade celebrates the spirit of exploration and courage that inspired Christopher Columbus’s 1492 expedition and the important contributions Italian-Americans have made to the United States. Over a dozen high school bands, as well as virtuosi professional groups from the United States and Italy, marched up Fifth Avenue and filled the canyons of midtown with joyous, heart-pounding music. Traditional folk groups performed centuries-old dances, and cutting-edge designs were brought to the parade route in displays of the vibrant culture that is Italy today.

The competition led into a non-stop day of fashion shows from popular retailers such as Lilly Pulitzer, Tommy Bahama, Lucky Brand, White House/Black Market, Chico’s, Ann Taylor, Cache, Banana Republic, Guess, Francesca’s Collections (a newer merchant to the mall) and so many more. Accessories and shoes played a key role as well and stores that participated were Nine West, Steve Madden, Bag’n Baggage and a variety of others. The audience was whisked off to the beach with swimsuit fashions from Everything But Water.


Highlights of the trends included layering, outfits and boots in animal prints, strapless glamour in sequins, sheaths and cape dressing, textured tights, trench coats, faux fur vests paired with jeans, black and white tweed dresses, the little black dress, cowl neck sweaters and suits that made a statement in powerful colors. It was an endless array of all the incomparable looks of the seasons. Local celebrities walked the runway in the shows as well. Appearing were Keli Fulton of WPTV NewsChannel 5, Shelli Lockhart of WPBF 25 and Nathalie Pozo of WTVJ NBC 6.

The Gap Show featured fashions for adults as well as children and included some of the most adorable and photogenic kids strutting and bopping down the runway. The audience received a real treat when Boca’s own Brett Loewenstern who gained fame on last season’s American Idol show, modeled a layered look over jeans from Gap. As he came down the catwalk, young girls swooned and reached out to touch him.


Brett also entertained fans with a few of his songs and drew a huge crowd as they clapped to the rhythm.

One of the best parts of the day was the interactive segments between shows. Attendees could text a key word to their phones to receive great gift prizes and tickets were drawn each hour (spa packages, gift cards, mall merchandise).

In ‘Ready, Set, Style’, volunteers were picked from the crowd to dress and accessorize two models for a Simon gift card. They had two minutes to complete the assignment with a bit of help from the audience.

Style and beauty demonstrations were taking place at various locations in the mall and select stores were offering great discounted deals all day.

This event could not have been possible without the generous sponsorship of Braman Motorcars of the Palm Beaches, Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Ulysse Nardin and the Pandora Store at the Boca Town Center Mall.

The theme of the show was appropriately named ‘Made in Africa’ with a variety of Spring 2012 collections shown by seven African designers: Bunmi Koko, Jewel by Lisa, Asibelua, Larre Da Silva, La Kluk CGDT, Pierre-Antoine Vetterello and Tsemaye Biniti. One of the lovely and talented young artists to wow the crowds was Leona Lewis who gave a powerful rendition of some of her hits including an acoustic cover of “Grenade” by Bruno Mars.

Celebrities were out in full force including June Ambrose, ‘America’s Next Top Model’ judge J Alexander, Omarion, ‘The A-List New York’ star Nyasha and Terry Crews of BET’s “The Family Crews”.

In addition to spotlighting gorgeous fashions, ARISE Magazine wanted to raise awareness and funds in support of Africa’s ongoing clean water initiative.

The stage was set in the form of an upside down A to signify Arise. The collections ranged from simple sheaths to intricate formal gowns of sheer silk and sparkling sequins.

Fitted floral dresses were professionally perfect. One of the most interesting outfits of the evening was the ravishing bluish/purplish strapless floor length gown with what looked like a 3D bodice.

A model sauntered down the runway in an austere white long-sleeved gown adorned with lavish feathers on the bottom.

Flowing fabric in a tie-dye pattern was draped tastefully and worn majestically by a model.

A rainbow of orange, yellow, green and brown sequins bounced sparkles across the room as the model graced the stage.

The clothes were for every occasion from the beach to the office to the ballroom.

Through Mercedes-Benz Spring 2012 Fashion Week, these gifted designers were given the opportunity to showcase their fashions on a worldwide platform.

Once the show came to a close, the big after-party took place at the luxurious Essex House overlooking Central Park with some of the designers taking part in the celebration. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres were plentiful and the guest D.J. filled the dance floor with his hot sounds. The surprise of the evening was when Grammy award-winning R&B singer and songwriter, R. Kelly, enter the stage and sang a variety of his all-time great hits. He had the partygoers swooning and they even joined in on a few well-known songs.

The evening continued way past the midnight bewitching hour. The crowd was still full of energy.

It can be agreed that the close of Mercedes-Benz Spring 2012 Fashion Week will not soon be forgotten.

The unified purpose is to honor governments, the United Nations, the private sector and the civil society. Organized by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuba, the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the South-South News, it has been publicized that the main purpose of the function is to bridge the digital divide.

Sponsoring the awards are two of the world’s most respected companies. Polaris Aviation Solutions is a premier jet aircraft company based in the United States but committed to global development initiatives. With their use of communication technology, they strive to achieve the Millennium Development goals.

Cool Cartoon Communications Co. Ltd. is a company specializing in digital animation design and production, CG visual effects, digital animation technology development, educational programs, film and TV production and services and integrated media communication services.

The Master of Ceremony for the evening was the lovely and talented Patricia Velasquez. In addition to modeling and acting, Patricia also takes part in charity work. She was the first Latina supermodel to walk the runway for Chanel, Gucci, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana and more. She is a UNESCO Artist for Peace, has received the Women Together Award at the United Nations in 2009 and received the Solidarity Award in November 2010. She has launched her own hair care line known as Taya Beauty.

Walking the Red Carpet were heads of state, ministers, ambassadors, leading private sector stakeholders and key figures from the media and entertainment world.

The lineup of performers and entertainers read like a ‘Who’s Who’ and attendees were given a royal treat. Performing were:
Robin DiMaggio – World’s premiere drummer and percussionist as well as songwriter, composer just to name a few of his many talents. He is also the Music Director of the South-South Awards.

Kenny G. – Smooth jazz saxophonist who has released more than 75 million albums throughout his career

Roberta Flack – Grammy winner who tells her stories through her music. Humanitarian and mentor providing innovative and inspiring music educations program to underprivileged students free of charge.

David Paich – musician and main composer of the rock and pop band, Toto and inducted into the Musician’s Hall of Fame with the other members of Toto. He also composed the theme for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Oumou Sangare – Musician and Ambassador of Wassoulou, advocate for women’s rights and opposes child marriage and polygamy.

Miri Ben-Ari – Hailing from Israel, this Grammy Award winning violinist has done all kinds of music and performed with Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Donna Summer and more. She is co-founder of ‘Godenk’ (‘Remember’), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness among young people about Holocaust. She was invited by Michelle Obama to perform during Women’s History Month.

Michael Bearden – Well-known for performing at President Obama’s star-studded inaugural concert at Lincoln Memorial.

Other great performers include Don Felder, Keaton Simons, Bakithi Kumalo, Lenny Castro and Larry Saltzman.

To most young girls today, Bebe means sexy and sultry. As part of New York Fashion Week Showcase and with generous support from STOLICHNAYA Vodka, BeautiControl, TONI & GUY, JAVA MONSTER, NeuroWater, Zoom!Teeth Whitening and Sennheiser Headphones and Microphones and the New York Post, Style360 presented the bebe Black Spring 2012 Collection at the Metropolitan Pavilion.


With a girlish innocence and effeminate appeal, the clothes represented fun and flirtatious flowing with femininity. Getting up close and personal in the front row was Sammi Sweetheart of Jersey Shore, Alex McCord and Simon Van Kempen of the Real Housewives of New York, Julissa Bermudez (Actress), Wynter Gordon (singer) and Jessica Perez (Victoria’s Secret Model).



They all seem to be big Bebe fans wearing that particular style and looking fabulous. Music for the event was provided by The Misshapes.



From the clothing to the shoes to the wild white unkempt hair, the show was overcome with white. The sunglasses, worn by every model, were the dark contrast to the rest of the attire.

Some of the incomparable outfits shown on the runway included the alabaster silk dotted swiss bloomer and the alabaster stretch linen jacket and short with silk blouse.

There were length variations on the everyday dress which included the adorable silk and cotton voile Daphne dress, silk linen dress with tiered bell sleeve, graduating sheer layered maxi with lots of petticoat dressing, corseted bloomers and strapless jumpsuit.

Some of the characteristic Spring 2012 trend was incorporated into the mix in the form of loose-fitting shorts, flared pant, flouncy tiered skirts, loads of ruffles and lace, the short V-neck dress which gradually dropped to floor length in the back and much attention given to applique detail.


The shoes and accessories were just as essential to the collection as the clothing. Highlights of the shoes include nubuck vintage bootie, lace oxfords and lace and leather platform pump. The white sock was worn with some of the outfits to give an even more dramatic effect.


There were such dainty accessories as a natural linen satchel with wood beads, canvas and antique lace tote and natural straw crossbody with gold chain.


It was a very distinctive and upbeat presentation in a more intimate setting of the Pavilion. Bebe fashion fans totally enjoyed the fashions of Beethoven time traveling into modern day princess.

In keeping with the patriotic spirit of 9/11, an American Flag was draped from the ceiling and able to be viewed by all as they entered Lincoln Center.

There were other promotions and interactive events going on throughout the week in collaboration. Fashion Plate Prix Fixe brought you a list of restaurants in the area whether you were rushing between shows or looking for a relaxing way to spend your afternoon or evening. The vast array of cultural restaurant hot spots brought to out-of-town attendees certainly was helpful.

Your fashion enthusiasm may have been more geared to fast cars and this was just the place for that. Looking sleek and sexy under lights was the all new 2012 C63 AMG Mercedes-Benz Coupe. Maybelline New York set up shop near the Studio and Box show entrances to let makeup aficionados see all the newest products and learn all the hot trends.

Writers and media personnel were able to check in and set up shop in the lounge area complete with charging station to keep your mobile and laptop devices fully charged and catch up on stories and email.

When you weren’t in the shows taking in all the new looks for Spring 2012, you were never at a loss to keep busy. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day to usher in the crowds. Amidst heavy security, everything went seamlessly as planned.

Mayor Bloomberg, Chairman of the National September 11th Memorial and Museum, was on hand to greet the very first visitors. Joining him was 9/11 Memorial and Museum President, Joe Daniels, alongside the site’s architects, Michael Arad and Peter Walker. In addition, New York Senator, Christine Quinn and New York City Comptroller, John C. Liu were on hand to greet the visitors. Also present at the opening was Anthoula Katsimatides, 39, who lost her brother John, a 31-year-old bonds broker for Cantor Fitzgerald. She is on the board of directors of the Memorial and Museum. What this has become to her is a place of solace, renewal, optimism and hope. It is where she can remember her brother and honor his life.




Visiting the memorial that morning was a moving, motivating and energizing experience ten years later knowing that we have been able to come back stronger than ever.

There were remembrances all throughout the day in New York City, Washington DC and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. As was so appropriately put earlier in the day, let’s not remember the evil and the bad but instead share in unity and solidarity and focus on the good people that were lost that day and gave their lives for others.

JC Penney on 33rd Street and 6th Avenue, brought in shoppers with “Miss for a Must”. You were given the opportunity to trade in one item in your closet and receive a $25 gift card to purchase a JC Penney Collection must-have piece.

Ann Taylor Loft in Times Square handed out champagne and hors d’oeuvres as shoppers pulled out their purses to rush to get fabulous deals at 30% off all merchandise.

Dolce and Gabbana used the evening to give fashion fans an exclusive preview of Passion Duo Lipstick, sponsored by Martini. The stars were out in full swing. Tyson Beckford, Jeff Gordon, Kelly Rutherford and Matthew Settle, Anna Wintour and LeAnn Rimes were all part of the party. The highlight of the evening was Justin Bieber who gave tweens “Bieber Fever” as they waited in line ready to have sign their Dolce and Gabbana FNO t-shirts. All proceeds from the evening went to benefit ‘Pencils for Promise’, an organization committed to supporting greater educational opportunities in the world.

The scene for anyone who wanted to party the night away was the trendy Meatpacking District and Soho, home to many a celebrity. Bruce Weber, Nan Bush and the crew of True’s Think Tank set the evening on fire.
Aritzia had ‘Spin the Wheel of Fashion’ so fashionistas could have a chance to win a gift card. Served were complimentary Lady Luck lemonade and vodka cocktails.
Intermix brought on Collaborations and Cocktails and Rachel Zoe was spotted enjoying herself.
Jack Spade hosted a NYC scavenger hunt by Watson Adventures with complimentary cocktails.
For singing enthusiasts, they were able to try out their talent at Kate Spade’s karaoke and cocktails.

It was an evening of flavor and flair that was enjoyed by all in the city where it originated and continues to give a boost to the economy year after year.

Tiny and sexy bikinis in solids and prints perked up the runway. Model’s curves were highlighted in sleek fitting suits of high quality material.

The maillot was very popular on the catwalk. Hues of white and seafoam were simple yet classic in beauty. A halter top maillot was delicate in pale yellow with a featherprint of orangish-red and slight purple intertwined together.

Amethyst and bright pink were striking combinations for a plunging statusphere maillot completed with gold dangle earrings and beige heels.

The biggest trend of the season is still the animal print. A cheetah print maillot fastened with a tie at one shoulder couldn’t have been more fitting for a blond tanned beauty in a floppy black hat with a sheer black cover-up poncho.

Giving a unique flair to the average bikini was embellishment and lace. A triangle lace tie two-piece suit had a pattern which resembled snowflakes.

A black bikini was adorned with gold stones on the top and bottom of the suit looking flashy and festive.

Experimenting in individuality, solid colors were mixed and matched with prints that actually paired wonderfully together.

The tankini made a brief appearance during the show as well. The statusphere babydoll tankini with plunging neckline was simply adorable.

A jet black tankini with a V-shaped slit at the bodice revealed a white bandeau top underneath fastened at the top with a silver brooch. Black canvas wedges completed the total look.

Not only were suits important in the new Luxe Collection but cover-ups played a very important role too. Lightweight and sheer ponchos in pretty prints were designed with matching suits in mind. Gold and statusphere tunics and featherweight caftans are easily coordinated with any type of swimwear.





Tab side pants in lightweight blousy fabrics can be slipped over a luxedo bandeau top.

The show was a huge success and drew large crowds. Famous bachelorette, Ali Fedotowsky, was spotted admiring the glamorous fashions from the front row. Lisa Vogel appropriately received the ‘Mercedes-Benz Presents’ award this year. This honor is bestowed upon designers that demonstrate dedication to the use of quality materials, unique style and innovative design. Vogel’s expertise and experience in the swimwear industry is exemplified in this top-rated collection.

We will be seeing much more of Luxe by Lisa Vogel in the future and fans are looking forward to seeing what Lisa has in store for them next year at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim.

Bunny Wailer and Bob Marley were raised in the same household as stepbrothers.[2] Bunny’s father Thaddeus “Toddy” Livingston lived with Bob Marley’s mother Cedella Booker and they had a daughter named Pearl Livingston.

As he was by some way the least forceful of the trio, he tended to sing lead vocals less often than Marley and Tosh in the early years, but when Bob Marley left Jamaica in 1966 for Delaware, to be replaced by Constantine “Vision” Walker, he began to record and sing lead on some of his own compositions, such as “Who Feels It Knows It”, “I Stand Predominant” and “Sunday Morning”. Gospel was very influential on his music as was the soul of Curtis Mayfield. In 1967, he recorded “This Train”, based on a gospel standard for the first time at Studio One.

As the Wailers moved from producer to producer in the late 60′s, he continued to be underused as a writer and lead vocalist, although he sang lead on “Riding High”, and on one verse of the Wailers’ Impressions-like “Keep On Moving”, both produced by Lee Perry. By 1973, each of the three founding Wailers operated their own label, Marley with Tuff Gong, Tosh with H.I.M. Intel Diplo, and Bunny Wailer with Solomonic. He sang lead vocals on “Reincarnated Souls”, the B-side of the Wailers first Island single of the new era, and on two tracks on the Wailers last trio LP, “Burnin’” , “Pass it On” (which had been cut as a sound-system only dub plate five years earlier) and “Hallelujah Time”. By now he was recording singles in his own right, cutting “Bide Up”, “Arab Oil Weapon” and “Life Line” for his own label.

Bunny Wailer toured with the Wailers in England and the United States, but soon became reluctant to leave Jamaica. He and Tosh became more marginalized in the group as the Wailers became an international success, and attention was increasingly focused on Marley. Bunny subsequently left the Wailers to pursue a solo career, which continues in the present.

After leaving the Wailers, Bunny became more focused on his spiritual faith. He identified with the Rastafari movement, as did the other Wailers. He has also written much of his own material as well as re-recording a number of cuts from the Wailers catalogue. Bunny Wailer has recorded primarily in the roots style, in keeping with his often political and spiritual messages. The album Blackheart Man is a good example of his roots reggae style, while “Sings the Wailers” successfully reworks many of The Wailers songs with the backing of top Jamaican musicians, Sly and Robbie. He experimented with disco on his album ‘Hook Line & Sinker’. He has also had success recording in the typically apolitical, more pop dancehall style. He has outlived his contemporaries in a culture where death by violence is commonplace.

Bunny Wailer was both the quietest and most spiritually creative of the Wailers. However, he also had a dancehall/Rockers edge that was best exemplified by the album “Bunny Wailer Sings the Wailers” in which he re-interprets some of the Wailers material as a solo Roots singer backed by a solid Sly & Robbie based Roots reggae grouping. The album was produced by Bunny Wailer, recorded at Harry J studios. Some of these tracks are re-worked classic Wailers tracks (e.g. Dreamland – a cover of El Tempos’ My Dream Island with slightly reworked lyrics that became Bunny’s signature song. This was first recorded in 1966 by Clement Coxsone Dodd, later 1970 with Lee ‘Scratch” Perry and released as a 7″ in 1971 with a U-Roy version on the B -Side). Another classic is Dancing Shoes, first recorded in the mid 1960s as a driving Ska/Soul classic with Bunny Wailer as lead vocal.

As a tribute to his success, Bunny Wailer has won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1990, 1994 and 1996.
The launch of The Jamaica Music 50 and The Wailers 50th Anniversary Campaign 2012-2014

Jamaica Music 50 is a multi-year celebratory campaign to understand the creative genius, technological innovations and visions of key entrepreneurs that created an industrial basis for the development of the uniquely Jamaican music forms that revolutionized music in Jamaica and around the world in the 20th century.

Today, Bunny resides in Kingston and on a farm located in the interior of Jamaica (Saint Thomas), according to Bob Marley’s official website. Bunny Wailer and Beverley Kelso are the only surviving members of the original Wailers. In recent years, Bunny has attracted controversy for his outspoken views on women and homosexuality. Bunny still keeps going strong these days. With the release of a new album, he is revitalizing his catalogue and once again captivating his fans with his reggae music.

As Bunny Wailer can be heard saying, “The Best of the Wailers is yet to come”…………..

With an explosive comeback, I-Octane ignited the crowd with his energetic performance. Fans held butane-fueled torches and there was a massive crackling bonfire right in the center of Catherine Hall as a tribute to the hot performer. Although R. Kelly was unable to take part in Sumfest, his replacement, Jamaican native Cocoa Tea, wowed the audience with his classic Reggae music and had them on their feet in a dancehall daze.It wouldn’t be a show without The Energy God also known as Elephant Man who made sure his fans got what they came for. Other popular artists to hit the stage were Mya, Half Pint, Beenie Man, Jah Cure, Bounty Killer, Mavado, Tanya Stephens, Konshens, Assassin, Kip Rich only to name a few. Great legend, Bunny Wailer, took the stage for an unforgettable and superb performance that raised Reggae music to an all-time high. Although the crowd and the majority of the media seemed to dissipate, the die hards held their places and they were not disappointed. Bunny took Reggae to a whole new level. Joined by his daughter at one point, he did an excellent job with his rendition of Bob Marley tunes.
Another prodigy who is one of the Kings of Reggae is Beres Hammond, Beres a crowd favorite wowed the crowds with hits after hits , the reception he got from fans was exceptional. Beres known for his soulful voice and electric lover’s rock ballads was honored at the festival for 35 years of outstanding contributions to Jamaica’s music business.

Reggae Sumfest has been one of the most profitable events in Jamaica year after year bringing in close to $9 million in revenue for Montego Bay which equates to 6,000 visitors. Over 30,000 fans attended Sumfest this year in just a 3-night period, 50,000 viewers logged in to the ‘live stream’ and 3,000 people have pre-registered for the PPV on Demand Reggae Sumfest concert, available on August 5th.
Some of the corporations serving as sponsors this year were Digicel Telecommunications, The Jamaica Tourist Board, Montego Bay’s Secrets Resort, Pepsi Jamaica, Iberostar Hotel and Jamaica’s own Red Stripe Beer. Digicel sponsored Sumfest’s side stage for lesser-known artists giving them the opportunity to attract new followers and avid fans.
One of the most dedicated and instrumental people behind the huge success of the event were Sumfest’s Director of Marketing and Sponsorship, Marcia McDonough. Her tireless efforts were seen in each and every performance that took place in the venue.
A big thanks also goes out to Headline Media Management for their fantastic job at coordinating the media and the media tents and how coordinated and organized they made each and every day without any incidents.

And finally, credit goes to Johnny Gourgzong, Executive Director of Reggae Sumfest and the entire production crew, for a well planned, executed and successful event. By far one of the Best Sumfest.

Although Reggae Sumfest was ultimately one of the most successful weeks in Montego Bay, there were mixed reactions from the crowd and the less than perfect reception for all-time greats like Bunny Wailer begs the question, “Could Reggae be on the download or are some renditions of Reggae ready for a revival?” What do you think?
