Countdown begins to June 9th, 2012 as this becomes one of the biggest days on Randall’s Island; one of Manhattan’s main recreation hubs.  Icahn Stadium has served as one of the monumental training grounds for many a star athlete.  Now the Island is proud to welcome, for the eighth year, the adidas Grand Prix.  Sports fans will thrill to professional events including hurdles, high jumps, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and more exciting competitions.  In addition, the amateur events include the adidas High School Boys’ Dream Mile and the High School Girls’ 4 x 100m relay along with other great opportunities for promising young athletes.

Each of the competitors brings their own style and enormous capabilities and strengths to the field to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

Recently, more athletes have been announced making the competition even fiercer.  The reigning 5000-meter Olympic gold medalist, a New Jersey high school star who will be competing for the first time as a professional and a double amputee known as “Blade Runner” will be in for the opportunity to make Olympic history.

The women’s 5000 meters will be a real treat as Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia headlines the event.  She will surely be difficult to beat since she is one of the best female distance runners in history.  She is a 2008 double Olympic gold medalist winner and seven-time world champion.

Athletes will be represented from countries all over the world as far away as Sudan, South Africa, Jamaica, Panama, Cuba, Great Britain and as close as New Jersey.

This is one of the premier track-and-field events in the world bringing together those individuals who reign as #1 in their competitive arena and giving this event their very best effort, determination and drive.

The adidas Grand Prix is the sixth stop on the International Samsung Diamond League circuit and the third stop on the Visa Championship Series.

Sponsors include large companies familiar with the sports world such as adidas itself, New York Road Runner and USA Track & Field.  Other companies standing behind the event and known around the globe are Omega, Western Union, Visa and Progressive.
