CFDA CELEBRATES EARTH DAY

Across the globe, environmentally conscious individuals have been celebrating Earth Day all month long. April is the special month of the year when we make sure that our earth is protected for future generations as one of the most important goals of the present.
One of the most recognized associations in the fashion world today is making it a point to practice sustainability in design. For the very first time, the Council of Fashion Designers of America has announced that they will create a Sustainability Committee to foster and support these measures in the fashion industry through mentorship, education and collaboration. The initiative will be led by a Steering Committee. On this committee will be CFDA members and industry experts that have the knowledge and commitment to socially and environmentally practice restorative business. The overriding goal will be to inspire and empower designers to take practical and prosperous steps towards sustainable design.
Some of the members of the Sustainability Committee include co-chairs Scott Hahn and Melissa Joy Manning. The Steering Committee is made up of Maria Cornejo, Victoria Bartlett, Pamela Love and Tina Lutz.
On the day designated especially as Earth Day, April 22nd, the CFDA made it even more memorable as they hosted a very first Google+ Hangout hosted by model and actress and all-around beauty, Amber Valletta.
The Sustainability Committee Co-Chairs were in attendance and it was all about Earth Day. Responsible design practices and ways that consumers can practice environmentally safe buying behaviors were the main informative topics of the day.
We can end the month on a strong note as you are invited to take part in the CFDA/Lexus Eco-Fashion Challenge 2013. Applications are currently being accepted until the deadline of Friday, July 26, 2013. This program was founded in 2010 as a response to Lexus and CFDA’s commitment to sustainable practices. Those designers that best demonstrate a strong commitment to ecologically responsible and sustainable design and production are awarded a grand prize of $75,000. There are also 2 first prizes of $5,000 each that are given out to help increase the winning designers’ sustainable practices and /or the promotion of sustainability in their design, business and fashion week shows and presentations.
