THE DISCO DIVA RETURNS IN BRIGHT LIGHTS
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger Photographer: George Whylie Videographer: Maxine NolanThe Dancing Dame of Disco, Donna Summer, is gone but never ever forgotten.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Monday Nights with Oscar screening series brings us back to the disco era with the presentation of “Thank God It’s Friday”. This will take place at the Academy Theater in New York City on Monday, August 6, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
Drag Queen, Hedda Lettuce, will host the enchanting evening as film buffs will be treated to a rarely seen clip of the legendary disco queen herself, Donna Summer, performing at the 51st Annual Academy Awards.
The storyline takes us to a fictitious nightclub of the disco age and follows the antics of an assortment of staff and patrons in a series of intertwining stories and far-reaching escapades. It was a time when dance reigned supreme, drugs kept the night going and fashions sparkled with spunk and lit up the night.
“Thank God It’s Friday” marked the only feature film appearance by Donna Summer and the film itself won an Academy Award for Original Song for ‘Last Dance’ by Paul Jabara.
The tickets are a reasonable $5 for general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. If you prefer, you can purchase tickets online at www.oscars.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the box office prior to the event. The Academy Theater is at 111 East 59th Street (between Park and Lexington Avenues) in New York City.
