DRAPED IN THE GLORY OF GOLD – SON JUNG WAN
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger
A designer who has a knack for making beauty blossom eternally is Son Jung Wan. Equipped with a large serving of creativity and incredible imagination, it is no wonder that some of the most prestigious people in New York City can be seen in pieces from many of her collections.
On February 8, 2014, at the Pavilion in Lincoln Center at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2014, Son Jung Wan debuted her newest collection for the Fall 2014. In the lush atmosphere of this private venue, she drew guests that caught the attention of all the photographers.
Those in attendance included former Real Housewife of New York Kelly Bensimon, Adrienne Bailon of “The Real”, “Gossip Girl’s” Kelly Rutherford and Radio Disney’s Jake Whetter. Both Kelly and Adrienne were keeping warm in coats from the designers’ collections.
The inspiration for the designer this season was the abstract expressionist, Mark Rothko, who always seemed to convey poignant sentiments from joy to sadness using color to get that feeling across to his enthusiasts. Son Jung Wan carried that emotion into the creation of all of her pieces shown on the runway. Gold was one of the most dominant colors of the collection including the color of the lipstick worn by the models. They bore a strong resemblance to Greek goddesses with the gold lips and fair complexions and stone-like eyes.
Clothing in hazelnut and ivory hues was punctuated with jewel tones in sapphires, plums and garnet. Pieces that were imprinted in our minds included cream cashmere sculptural jackets, gold leather leggings, fur coats in vibrant colors and chic gunmetal/multi-sequin cocktail dresses for an evening of stand-out fashion.
To Wan, dressing the man is just as important as dressing the woman and the show was a mixture of that magic. Men wore white coats trimmed with a gold metallic collar and dark clothing was demure. Rounded collars and futuristic sideways zippers added a sense of originality. Fur sleeves, varying lengths of dresses and oversized fur coats were all well noticed.
This was a very soft and elegant side of Son Jung Wan. Giving her audience even more than they came for, is just one of the greatest qualities that a designer can possess and Son Jung Wan continues to raise the bar season after season. Not only is she a designer, but her life is filled with reward and satisfaction from being a wife and mother, art collector, avid traveler and philanthropist.
