THE EMMY AWARDS 2012
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger Photographer: George Whylie Videographer: Maxine NolanOne of the biggest nights of the year is when all the stars come together to celebrate The Emmy Awards. Television is still the most popular type of entertainment and these awards recognize hard work and daily dedication. Categories include outstanding comedy, drama, miniseries and reality programming. The much anticipated ceremony took place on Sunday, September 23, 2012, at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Host for the evening was the outrageous Jimmy Kimmel with a host of stars by his side presenting the golden statue to those most deserving of the honors.
HBO received the most nominations and was proud to take away 23 awards, the most prizes claimed with hits such as Game of Thrones, Game Change and Boardwalk Empire. CBS came in second place with 16 wins from popular shows such as Two and A Half Men. Mad Men received the most nominations for a television program but Homeland walked away with the most wins. This just happens to be President Obama’s favorite program. Modern Family seems to be a pro at the winning game and had just about as many awards.
What many may not realize is that another 81 awards were given out on September 15, 2012 in the creative arts ceremony including children’s television, non-fiction programs and behind-the-scenes work.
Even though we sit on the edge of our seats waiting for the winners to be announced and watching their acceptance speeches, one of the best parts of the Emmy Award Show has to be the Red Carpet arrivals of the celebrities and stars. The heat was stifling but so were the fashions. Bright colors and pastels equally blazed the carpet in strapless and plunging neckline gowns. All those in attendance kept their cool.
Three of the top winners for Best-Dressed for the evening included Hayden Panettiere in a gold gown wrapped in sheer blue by Marchesa complete with a train. She accessorized with Harry Winston jewels, Giuseppe Zanotti heels and Judith Leiber clutch. We will be seeing more of Hayden as she is the star of a new fall series on television.
Elisabeth Moss also took the Best-Dressed Award in a floral print Dolce & Gabbana strapless gown with ruched waistline. She was decorated in diamonds and showing off her new do of blond tresses.
Connie Britton was dubbed Best-Dressed in her silver halter gown with gold trim ready to dramatically shine on the Red Carpet and exceptionally ready for the occasion.
Heidi Klum lit up the runway in a suggestive light green Alexandra Vauthier gown with slits up the legs and matching earrings and shoes. The outfit was pulled together with a sash around the waist.
Sofia Vergara was the audience pick for Best-Dressed in a sparkling halter Zuhair Murad mermaid-like gown and decked out in diamonds. She looked amazing as always!
Crazy funny Kristen Wiig has departed Saturday Night Live but was hoping for a win to see her off. Although she didn’t win an Emmy, she certainly was a winner in a very feminine and frilly Balenciaga gown accentuating her dark locks.
Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt were well put together as the handsome couple that pulled in looks as they made their way to the theatre.
Claire Danes was pregnant but oh so precious in a sunflower yellow Lanvin strapless gown. She was chosen for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Tina Fey wowed in a purple strapless Vivienne Westwood gown with her hair pulled up and appearing cool, calm and collected. She looked back in retrospect at 30 Rock as countdown is underway to the final episode this season. She is working on determining an ending that will leave viewers stunned.
Seasoned Stella McCartney seemed to be the designer of choice for a couple of the stars who definitely wore the fashions in a confident and charismatic manner. They were Amy Poehler and Edie Falco.
Sparkling next to her beau, Ryan Seacrest, Julianne Hough radiated in a strapless seafoam Georges Hobeika Fall 2013 Couture Gown accentuating her hour-glass figure.
Lucy Liu looked like she stepped right out of a futuristic film in her metallic strapless Versace gown with chainmail links. The curves seemed to be in all the right places. She is excited about her new fall show and the promise that it brings for her career.
Prada was Lena Dunham’s pick. The 26 year-old has made quite a name for herself in the world of television and tried to spruce herself up a bit in this flowing gown.
Jason Wu willfully outfitted Mad Men star, Jessica Pare’ in a custom-made white one-shouldered gown with black thin belt and dangling diamonds from her ears. She resembled a Grecian goddess on display.
Black was befitting for Kathy Griffin and layered and ruffled just right to compliment her fine figure.
Kelly Osbourne was dressed in Zac Posen Resort ’13 in an asymmetrical, one-shouldered gown with a fishtail hem. It was light purple and particularly pleasing to the crowd.
The stars just kept coming and Lara Spencer, Chris Harrison and Ryan Seacrest enjoyed giving viewers a look into the fashions of the evening and keeping us constantly entertained.
