Convicted American student, Amanda Knox, is back in the news these days.

Serving 26 years in an Italian prison for the murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, Amanda Knox’s appeal case is bringing about the re-examination of the forensic evidence. Independent forensic experts are testifying that vital DNA evidence used for conviction in the case was unreliable and possibly contaminated.

The case has drawn worldwide media attention from the day that Meredith was found dead half clothed with her throat slashed in the house shared with Knox. Knox and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were immediately suspected and questioned. Video captured the two young students in a loving embrace appearing indifferent to the whole situation at hand.

The two items that were found and used as evidence of Amanda’s guilt were a 30cm kitchen knife found at Sollecito’s apartment and a clasp from Meredith’s bra found at the scene of the crime. Both were said to have a small bit of DNA from Knox and blood from the murder victim.

Now just over 2 years later, forensic experts appointed by the court are professing that they could find no traces of blood on the knife. The DNA was so small that it should be considered ‘inadmissible’. There were said to be more than 50 errors in the original investigation. The bra strap was lost for six weeks before it was discovered. Footage showed police officers picking up the clasp with dirty gloves and then dropping it before picking it up again without tweezers. Of course, Police Chief Piero Angeloni denies that his team was incompetent and stands by them.

Perhaps this new introduction of information points one step closer to possible freedom soon for Knox. As one would expect, Amanda was breathing a sigh of relief hoping that these new findings might help her appeal case and move it in a more positive direction.
