Jamaica Showcase at MBIFW By Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger

Miami Beach International Fashion Week is off to a fantastic start. The event is rapidly gaining momentum with interactive booths, celebrity chef cuisine and wine tastings as attendees anxiously await the shows to begin.

Friday night, March 4th, premiered the Jamaica Collective featuring two finalists from Jamaica’s Mission Catwalk Designers Challenge – Ayanna Dixon and Shenna Carby. One of the honored guests of the evening was Sandra Grant Griffiths, JP Consul General of Jamaica.

Ayanna Dixon used her creative energies to put together a brilliant collection. The exciting newcomer was one of two finalists in the recent Catwalk Challenge and her win was evident in her designs shown. She uses rich fabrics in brilliant colors such as blue and hot pink to give the clothes a stylish sophistication.

Blue and then yellow form-fitting pants are paired with a black off-the-shoulder shirt. Low cut simple black dresses shout versatility all the way.

A long flowing blue gown hugs the curves of the model as she glides down the runway. A wild pink one-shouldered gown appropriately finished off the collection.

Shenna Carby, another incredibly talented designer and finalist at The Catwalk Challenge, also gave us an exceptional collection. The fashions can easily be described as evening elegance.

Chiffon and silky fabrics brought out the beauty of the dresses with a sleek refinement. The collection began with more casual attire such as a bright orange strapless one-piece short outfit gathered at the bodice and a stunning colorful flowing scarf coverup over a tiny bikini.

Dresses were simple with cut-out backs. The line then unfolded into Grecian-like gowns in bright colors such as peaches and pinks. A long ivory colored open-back gown with draping of the skirt was simply lovely. A hot pink strapless gown would be a superb choice for that special formal affair. To finish, a model hit the runway in a simple pink above-the-knee dress and the dress was given a formal flair with a chiffon-like train attached to the back.

Lastly, Jamaica Collective was a fabulous finish. Camesha Powell for POSHE brought us a very trendy, eye-catching collection. The little black dress was a beauty in knee-length or long gown. The trend of bright colors continued in short dresses and small headpieces accessorizing some of the outfits. A real beauty was the simple black dress with white short ruffled sleeves and a white ruffle around the hemline. Another favorite was the black and white dress with a fullness to the skirt and a contrasting red belt to bring the whole dress together. The perfect accessory was a black and white hat which gave the model a glamorous yet eccentric sort of look.

Each of the designers featured will undoubtedly rise to the top of the fashion ladder with their ingenious knack for style.
