On Tuesday, August 5, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz celebrated the 51st anniversary of Jamaica’s independence at a flag raising ceremony held at Brooklyn Borough Hall. As of 2008, almost 80,000 Brooklynites claim Jamaican ancestry, making the borough home to one of the largest such populations in America.

“I salute all Jamaicans here in Brooklyn on this glorious celebration of independence and cultural pride,” said BP Markowitz. “Like Jamaica’s creed proclaims, out of many, we are one people. From the leaders of government to the luminaries of stage and screen, Jamaicans have contributed greatly to our borough and our city, as they will do for years to come.”
