It appears that Madonna is back in the spotlight again. This time she is traveling across the continent for the premiere of her new movie, W.E., a film that she has directed and starring Abbie Cornish and Andrea Riseborough.

W.E. is the story of Wallis Simpson who had an affair with King Edward VIII in 1937 which ultimately caused the abdication of his throne. The story is told through the eyes of a modern character who becomes obsessed with the American divorcee who became Duchess of Windsor and who’s life story is similar and intertwined.

On October 23rd at the BFI London Film Festival at Empire Leicester Square, Madonna, dressed in a black L’Wren Scott dress with a pink diamante pattern, Dolce & Gabbana coat and Gucci purse and shoes, introduced her film to critics and fans alike. The film was originally shown at the Venice Film Festival.
On December 3rd, befitting to Madonna the artist, the film premiered in the United States in New York City at the Museum of Modern Art. It was hosted by The Cinema Society and Piaget. Madonna looked elegant and royal in a glittering embroidered top with black skin tight pants and high black platforms giving her statuesque form.

Representing the beauty of Piaget, she wore a Limelight Tonneau watch in 18-carat white gold with 980 brilliant-cut diamonds accompanied by a Piaget Possession bracelet in 18-carat white gold with 20 brilliant-cut diamonds. Comfortable in front of the cameras, she smiled and gave the fans exactly what they had come for, a glimpse at the superstar. Explaining the thought behind the character in the movie, Madonna stated, ” Wallis Simpson didn’t have the opportunity to defend herself so I’m doing that for her.” Madonna has always been a fan of romanticism and happy endings so we must see if this film follows suit. She was surrounded by her press rep, personal assistants and security.

The Red Carpet was filled with the artist’s friends and well-known celebrities and designers. Those attending the premiere included Anderson Cooper, Jeff Gordon, Kim Cattrall, Rachel Roy, Andre’ Leon Talley, Steven Meisel, Donna Karan, Jeremy Piven, Beth Stern, Valentino, Patti Smith and Nina Garcia.

Harvey Weinstein is distributing W.E. and was also on hand to introduce Madonna prior to the showing. He has worked with Madonna since 1990 on other ventures of which we are most familiar with ‘Truth or Dare’. He has enjoyed working closely with her throughout the years. He labels Madonna as ‘The Renaissance Woman’.

After the screening of the film, the crowd took to the Upper East Side to attend the after-party at ‘Crown’. Piaget presented Madonna with their signature cupcakes uniquely iced with ‘Congratulations M’.
The movie opens on February 3rd and 2012 may just be the year of Madonna. It has been confirmed that she will be the half-time entertainer at the Super Bowl and rumors have it that she is also releasing a new album.
Madonna is still going strong at 53.
