Today marks the 70th anniversary of the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Aside from the attacks of 9/11, this was one of the worst attacks in history. Eight battleships were attacked of which 2 were destroyed. Over 2,400 people lost their lives and we will never forget that horrific day. The heroes of that infamous day will be forever remembered.

At Pearl Harbor visitor center today, a rifle salute, wreath presentation and recognition of those whose lives were lost, took place. At 7:55 A.M., to signify the time of the attacks, F-22’s flew over the ceremony in a ‘missing man’ formation and a moment of silence took place. A U.S. Navy ship presented honors to the USS Arizona.

President Obama released a statement today honoring the memory of more than 2,400 American patriots – military and civilians, men, women and children – all those who fearlessly gave their lives in the first battle of World War II. Their legacy will live on for future generations.

President Obama expressed that the veterans and survivors of Pearl Harbor fought back heroically and were an inspiration to our nation, putting us on the path to victory. Perhaps their greatest accomplishments were overcoming the Great Depression, defeating fascism and turning adversaries into allies. After the war, they came home to build the strongest economy in the world.

We should be proud to pay tribute to these brave veterans and vow to continue their legacy, to keep our country strong, free and prosperous.
