“PARTY OF THE YEAR” AT THE MET
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger Photographer: George Whylie Videographer: Maxine NolanThere are few events throughout the year that draw a more elite attendance than the annual Costume Institute Benefit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The designer event of the year was held in New York City at the landmark Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur last night, May 7th. The gowns, the costumes, the crowd were spectacular and dazzling. The Red Carpet was filled with beauty beyond belief.
This was a celebration of a new exhibition called “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations”. The evening was hosted by the top experts of the fashion world; Carey Mulligan, Anna Wintour and Miuccia Prada along with honorary co-chair, Jeff Bezos. Ms. Wintour looked absolutely stunning in a Prada custom-made white gown adorned with a jeweled lobster and covered with a white mink stole with large yellow jewels around her neck. Her daughter, Bee, accompanied her in a lovely Japanese inspired embroidered blue, black and white gown.
Carey Mulligan was dressed in a futuristic scale-like dress gleaming under the lights of the cameras. The gazes were fixated on her.
Miuccia looked distinguished and elegant in a befitting outfit for the gala.
Debuting this year in the multi-media arena , the gala reached out to millions of viewers and fashion fanatics across the world,by live-streaming the entrances on the Red Carpet online from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. EST as guests arrived and then the segment was replayed throughout the evening. This was all courtesy of Vogue Magazine.
There were celebrities present from the world of fashion, film, sports, business and society and the compliments were plentiful.
Some of the most awesome fashions of the evening made heads spin and onlookers gasp. Feathers, sequins, trains and embellishment was all present in such a magical setting.
“Gossip Girl” scandalous cast of Ed Westick, Chace Crawford and glowing in a gold Marchesa lace and tulle gown, Leighton Meester, all walked the Carpet in class.
Sarah Jessica Parker was covered from head to toe in flowers in a Valentino gown. She looked quite conservative as compared to her Carrie Bradshaw character that she has portrayed for so many years.
In showgirl style, beautiful Beyonce appeared in an intricately beaded black Givenchy gown with sheer fabric and overflowing with purple and black feathers.
Superstar couples were in abundance such as Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen and Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake.
Solo and sultry was blond bombshell Cameron Diaz dancing the night away in a golden metallic Stella McCartney gown.
What isn’t to love about handsome Gerard Butler with his dreamy big eyes staring your way dressed in an Alexander McQueen tux.
From the red hair to the red dress with skinny shoulder straps and sequins galore, tall and adorable Emma Stone was as pretty as a ballerina and ready to party.
Women in white appearing like Grecian goddesses captured our hearts such as Gwenthyn Paltrow, Claire Danes, Amy Adams and model Anja Rubik. They all were fabulously trim and fit.
Appearing solo, Heidi Klum always dresses to impress and this evening was no exception as she had on an Escada mini with a long lace overlay. With a ton of carats around her neck, she couldn’t help but glisten.
In a dress that literally took hours of preparation, Jessica Chastain was posing for the cameras in a blue Louis Vuitton embellished gown hand-embroidered with pearls and crystals.
Our newest Hollywood Walk of Fame star, Scarlett Johansson, was bejeweled in a nude colored Dolce & Gabbana gown of grace.
Appearing fringed and fine, Rachel Zoe dressed Victoria’s Secret Angel, Karolina Kurkova, in her gold sequined creation with matching headdress.
Anticipation was curbed as Katherine McPhee was donned in an orange low-cut beaded gown from one of her favorite designers, Ellie Saab.
Blue velvet was very becoming on the daughter of money mogul, Donald Trump. Ivanka Trump wore the form-fitting gown in the best of ways with her blond hair pulled back and a thick diamond bracelet adorning her wrist.
Jamie King took our breath away in a roaring red satin-like gown that really flattered her fantastic figure.
Diversified performer that always brings fans to their feet, Bruno Mars, provided the entertainment following a choreographed performance by dancers in gold lame’ dresses and silver hair.
The banquet area was not just any party perfect room. Seats of plush red banquettes shaped in the form of lips were intertwined amongst dining chairs covered in classic Prada and Schiaparelli prints. The tables were decorated with silver bud vases filled with anemones. It was a feast to tantalize the appetite with baby lobster, American caviar, Veal Milanese and cocktails, of course. The final course included sugar cookies shaped like Prada shoes.
The evening would not be complete without a welcome from Mayor Michael Bloomberg who once again represented the great people of New York City, the energetic fashion capital of the world. The room came alive with excitement all throughout the evening.
From the historic location to the outfits to the guests, this event so appropriately earned its name, “Party of the Year”.
