As most people are aware, October is considered Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Events will be going on all around the country in support of research to save lives. Pink ribbons will be displayed and worn proudly as a courageous commitment to preventing and treating breast cancer as well as supporting family members and friends who are battling the deadly disease.

President Barack Obama conveys the significant progress that has been made in recent decades in the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Although we are slowly winning the battle, we cannot all be winners. The disease will take its toll and hundreds of thousands of women will lose the battle. African-American women are in part a large majority of those victims and experience higher death rates from breast cancer than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. Men also become victims of this cancer.

Prevent some of the risk factors like obesity. Know your family medical history and get regular check-ups, maintain a healthy body weight, eat right and exercise at least three times per week.

Get your mammogram on time because screening and early detection are mandatory measures.

With the new Affordable Care Act, all Americans joining new health-care plans can receive recommended preventative services, including annual mammograms for women over 40, with no out-of-pocket expenses. The new benefit also ensures that women in new insurance plans with high risk for breast cancer are covered when they speak with their clinicians about ways to prevent or delay the spreading of cancer.

Under the Affordable Care Act, a committee has been put in place to advance awareness and prevent breast cancer among young women.

President Barack Obama has proclaimed October 2011 as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. He encourages citizens, government agencies, private businesses, nonprofit organizations and any other interested groups to join in activities to increase awareness of what Americans can do to prevent and control breast cancer.
