‘PUNK: Chaos to Couture’

The MET Costume Gala is extremely addictive as one of the biggest events of the year,   celebrity guests arrived to walk the Red Carpet, some reliving the era through their attire for the evening.

Hundreds gathered to get a glimpse of the flowing gowns, fishnet stockings, strange headpieces and crowns and just to stand and take the whole scene in.  It was all captured live as it streamed on the Style Network and the Met’s website for viewers across the country as they sat and relaxed in their living rooms.

The beautiful Beyonce‘ served as Honorary Chair dressed in a Givenchy strapless sequined bodice, black belt and long skirt of a kaleidoscope of colors finished with long black gloves.

One of the Co-chairs was Academy Award nominated actress Rooney Mara in a plunging white broad-shouldered Givenchy gown with much left to the imagination and only a faint trace of Punk.  She was accompanied by Riccardo Tisci, creative director of Givenchy.

Other Co-chairs included Lauren Santo Domingo of MODA Operandi and Editor-In-Chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour, in a floral Chanel Couture gown.

While the gala provides endless intrigue and entertainment for those that admire from afar, it does happen to be the main source of annual funding for exhibitions, acquisitions and capital improvements.

There was such a wide variety of fashion.  Designers came with their muses arm in arm or standing nearby.  Uma Thurman and Zac Posen, Joan Smalls and Tom Ford, Kerry Washington and Vera Wang, Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs paraded on the Red Carpet.  Jennifer Lopez and Miranda Kerr both chose the eye-catching designs of internationally famous Michael Kors.  Dylan Lauren attended in a most exquisite Ralph Lauren gown keeping it all in the family.

There were those that were lovely in silk, feathers, beads, sequins and plenty of silver.  Taylor Swift in J. Mendel, Emmy Rossum and Hailee Steinfeld in Donna Karan Atelier, Kirsten Dunst in Louis Vuitton, Jennifer Lawrence in Dior and Katie Holmes in Calvin Klein all decided to forgo punk for a more feminine look.

Then there were those with a style all of their own.  Supermodel Linda Evangelista looked more like she belonged in a castle with her white knight rushing to the rescue.  Kim Kardashian was covered in flowers from head to toe as both she and her beau, Kanye West, were adorned in Givenchy.  Katy Perry wore a Dolce and Gabbana sequined church scene and decided to wear a crown to top the outfit while Kelly Osbourne was in Marc Jacobs and appeared to be trying to go punk.

Then there were those that decided to embrace the theme.  We have seen Miley Cyrus flash across the internet more than a dozen times in her punkish mesh Marc Jacobs creation with spiky hairdo and bold red lips.  Sienna Miller was in very tasteful Burberry with black studded headband and studded motorcycle jacket to match.

Nicole Richie took the theme to heart as she dyed her hair blue gray decked out in a metal sequined gown.  Our ‘Sex & The City’ star, Sarah Jessica Parker, didn’t dare disappoint as she looked the punk couture part in a mohawk-like Philip Treacy feathered headdress with Giles Deacon brown and ivory and yellow floral gown with knee-high tartan Christian Louboutin boots peeking out.

Black sequins were dripping from newly blond Anne Hathaway in vintage Valentino as the designer stood nearby.  Stacy Keibler decided to don the punk spirit in her unique Rachel Roy little black dress.  Feathers, mesh and slinky gold put punk and couture in a mesmerizing mix on Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Saint Laurent.  Jessica Biel’s style appeared to be Audrey Hepburn meets punk in her black Giambattista Valli outfit.

Flashback to the punk era as Debbie Harry took to the runway in Tommy Hilfiger and Florence of Florence & The Machine dressed in fringe.  The designer of the decade, Vivienne Westwood, outfitted Christina Ricci in a plaid gown which could have been plucked right out of the exhibition, fishnet stockings and all.

Eyes were ablaze in dark shadows, blacks and blues along with thick black eyeliner worn with a sense of individuality.

One of the winners of the evening that took the theme to the extreme had to be Madonna in a custom-made Givenchy outfit who stands out in a room no matter where she goes.  This time she even had a crucifix hanging from her butt with little less than a jacket to keep her warm.  The enchanting Coco Rocha also took the prize for that punk appeal in a leopard gown by Emanuel Ungaro with exaggerated makeup to match.

It can truly be said that punk invokes chaos to couture, inspiring again and again.  It is fashion, a way of life, a sense of style and an attitude.
