SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY 2013

By:  Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger

Saturday, November 30, 2013, is known as Small Business Saturday around the nation.  This is the busiest shopping weekend of the year and why not pay a visit to those retailers that make a solid difference in your community?  We all tend to gravitate towards the large retailers who offers us a wide variety of brands and stays open late hours but you may be pleasantly surprised at how much you can find at the friendly shops that cater to you on a more personal level.

It doesn’t matter what city you are in, small businesses are growing the economy and making it flourish with a pride that prevails in all of our communities these days.

The idea behind the day began in 2010 when an American Express committee headed up by American Express President, Ed Gilligan, decided it was time to create another holiday and build relationships with small businesses.  Statistics show that since its inception, the holiday has caught on, and in 2012, $4.5 billion was spent during Small Business Saturday.  The Department of Commerce and all of its smaller chambers across the United States do their best to actively promote this day.

Even President Obama takes advantage of the day as he takes his daughters shopping at local bookstores and he has advocated measures during his term to get small businesses back on their feet.  With the economy slowly on the upswing, there is no better time to make this day count.

All the Mom and Pop businesses also have to do their part as well to draw in their targeted consumer and it will prove to be a win win situation for them and for their satisfied consumer.

Shop small this Saturday, November 30, 2013, and you will support a very large cause.
