The Halloween Snowstorm

Just as people were packing away their sandals and their swimsuits, a freak snowstorm has pounded the Northeast this weekend. This furious snowstorm has now left over 4 million residents without power in record-breaking low temperatures. Up to 5 deaths have been reported and are now attributed to the storm.

From Pennsylvania to New York to Connecticut, towns and cities were left with a blanket of fresh snow coating streets, highways, parks and yards.
Three New York major airports had massive delays to and from destinations across the country and are still trying to get back to normal as the weekend winds down. One flight spent nine hours sitting on the runway with absolutely no food or water, very unpleasant circumstances and yet a direct result of Mother Nature’s wrath. Airlines are trying to work with travelers by refunding flights and giving out vouchers for future flights. Under the circumstances, cancellation fees have been waived.

Other forms of transportation (buses and trains) have also been having problems and widespread delays.

Top heavy trees filled with leaves were vulnerable as the snow draped them. One woman crawled out of her car as a tree limb fell right on top of the car rooftop. Branches are breaking from the weight of the snow and causing danger by downing power lines and causing outages.

Black Ice in Philadelphia on I-95 caused 30 cars to crash and ultimately two people were killed.
Over 15 inches of snow fell in West Milford, New Jersey and 12 inches fell in Harriman, New York. West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland saw over 9 inches of snow in just one day.

The Occupy Wall Street protestors are braving it in the most difficult of conditions.
Shelters are open as a relief to the bitter cold.
It will be a spooky white Halloween this year, one that has not been seen in over 100 years, truly a record.
