VICTORY GOES TO ROMNEY
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger Photographer: George Whylie Videographer: Maxine NolanIt was a long and grueling battle to get to the finish line in Michigan last night but Mitt Romney clenched the win and proved victorious by slipping ahead with only a 4% lead over Rick Santorum. It was an extremely tight race between the two candidates, especially in a state that Romney considered home for quite some time as he was born and raised there and his father was governor. Here is how it shaped up in that state: Romney – 41% Santorum – 37% Paul – 12% Gingrich – 7%. Although Santorum placed second, he was very optimistic saying, “A month ago they didn’t know who we are, but they do now!” He put up quite a fight and seemed to be overcoming the lead as he campaigned heavily in the state.
Just as important yesterday was the state of Arizona. Romney was backed by John McCain and easily won its 29 delegates in this win, giving him a sizeable delegate boost. Here is how it shaped up in Arizona: Romney – 47% Santorum – 27% Gingrich – 16% Paul – 8%. The economy was a key driver for voters in this state.
If support were combined for Rick Santorum and former House Speaker, Newt Gingrich, it would equal or exceed Romney’s support, heightening the competition as we move forward. For now, Gingrich is focusing on Georgia heading into Super Tuesday. Santorum looks to be leading in Tennessee at this point.
Mitt Romney now reclaims the title of frontrunner and with Super Tuesday and a 10-state showdown fast approaching, it is crucial that he maintains his lead.
