WE THE PEOPLE

On September 1st, the White House announced a new online engagement feature called ‘We The People’. As you might imagine, this is an initiative to give the American public a greater say in our government.

By going to http://www.WhiteHouse.gov, citizens will be able to create and sign petitions directly seeking action from the federal government. Issues can vary depending upon what is priority to you. If a petition gathers enough signatures, the White House staff will review it and ensure that it continues on to the proper policy experts and issue an official response.

This program will go into effect later this month. To sign up for an alert when it launches and preview the feature, visit http://www.WhiteHouse.gov/WeThePeople.

President Obama made a promise when he took office to make government more open and accountable to our nation and its people. This is the first step in showing that he is sincere in his word. This is what it is all about.

To create and build support for a particular petition, WhiteHouse.gov visitors need to create an account and reach out to friends, family and coworkers for signatures. If a petition reaches the threshold of 5,000 signatures within 30 days, it will be sent through the appropriate channels of the administration, reviewed and an official response will be published to WhiteHouse.gov and emailed to all petition signers.
