50 YEARS OF SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUITS
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger
The action-packed pages of Sports Illustrated cover every sport from basketball to football to tennis to soccer and breaking news about the NFL, the MLB, the NBA and the NHL. Once a year, the publication disappears off the shelves at a record-breaking pace.
It is none other than the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, every man’s desire and every woman’s envy. From the sultry shores of the Caribbean to the historic setting of Spain to the inviting waters of the Great Barrier Reef, year after year the issue has been photographed in every dream destination that you can possibly think of. Models in skimpy bikinis and even next to nothing body paint grace the pages in the most provocative yet tasteful ways. Being chosen as the cover model is a prestigious position to be able to add to any model’s portfolio. Heidi Klum, Estella Warren, Kate Upton and even Beyonce’ are just a few of the famous faces.
The year 2014 marks the 50th Anniversary for the highly publicized Swimsuit Issue of Sports Illustrated to come out on the shelves worldwide. To recognize the unprecedented popularity of this once a year issue, Hollywood threw a big party and the all-American girls that gave the issue its totemic stature, were in attendance. The star-studded party took place at the Dolby Theatre on Tuesday evening, January 14, 2014. It seems as if history was made once again with alumni attendees such as Christie Brinkley, Rachel Hunter, Kate Upton, Marissa Miller, Petra Nemcova, Kathy Ireland, Tyra Banks, Chrissy Teigen, Heidi Klum, Rebecca Romijn and Cheryl Tiegs. It wasn’t just the lovely ladies making their presence known. Steven Tyler was seen socializing and Slater Trout accompanied his gorgeous girlfriend, Ireland Baldwin, to the event. Ireland received her good looks from her mother, Kim Basinger.
Red and black were the dominating colors on the Red Carpet. These models must be doing something right because each looked like she stepped off the pages of Sports Illustrated just yesterday.
Many swimsuit fans will be happy to learn that just because you were not able to attend the festivities doesn’t mean that you can’t be part of the making of this 50th Anniversary issue. NBC is planning on airing a 2-hour special; ‘Sports Illustrated Swimsuit: 50 Years of Beautiful’ hosted by Heidi Klum. Learn about the making of the 50th Anniversary Issue. Lady Antebellum, Enrique Inglesias, John Legend and Tim McGraw will be performing on the special which airs on February 3, 2014 at 9:00 p.m..
