A Recap of Berlin’s Fashion Week By Hope Wilkos. As we slowly approach New York Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Week, the excitement winds down at Autumn/Winter 2011 Fashion Week Berlin. Berlin was the destination of style and fashion from January 19th-22nd. The setting was Bebelplatz, right in the historic center of the city of Berlin.

The stage was set by over 40 brands of German and International designers. Four days were loaded with elegance and innovation. Some of the notable designers that took part in the presentations included Hugo by Hugo Boss, Blacky Dress, Guess Jeans, G-Shock Launch featuring Rinzen, Dimitri, Irene Luft, Escada Sport and the list goes on and on.
An extra added treat was the first solo collection of Parsival Cserer who was the honored recipient of last season’s ‘Designer for Tomorrow’ Award by Peek and Cloppenburg KG Dusseldorf. This award is an avenue for the retail industry to give recognition and support to young talented designers with a sense of creativity and style. The competitors must have completed their studies within the last 24 months or provide proof of training in fashion design and do not yet have their collection on the market. Out of 150 entrants, the finalists were narrowed down to 8 and then finally Cserer was chosen in July 2010 as the winner and given a cash prize and the opportunity to show his fashions in a runway show at Autumn/Winter 2011 Fashion Week in Berlin. The collection was a huge hit and his success will be evident as the year progresses.
For the first time, all eyes were on a group of three Swedish designers who presented on the runway and captured the attention of their eager audience. Camilla Norrback had a strong environmentally conscious collection uniting retro-romantic style and modern shape. Diana Orving gave her fans layers, volume and draped fabrics. Lustre and transparency characterized her collection. Ida Sjostedt was the third Swedish designer with a sexy and fun collection inspired by the old starlets of the silver screen. She dabbled with fake fur, sequins, crystals and lace.
The largest sponsor for the event was Mercedes-Benz as is customary but other important sponsors included DHL, Maybelline Jade and Peek and Cloppenburg KG Dusseldorf. Endorsement came from the Senate for Economics and Technology and Women’s Issues, Berlin.
Fashion Week in Berlin has catapulted to the fashion forefront mainly in part due to having an advantage of creating a global fashion platform. What a great way to begin the year, with Germany’s biggest catwalk event!
