BROOKLYN, NY, November 26, 2013: Today, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz led a legion of volunteers as he gave away close to 1,000 turkeys and several tons of apples, yams, potatoes and collard greens to representatives of over a hundred local community groups. The food will be distributed to provide Thanksgiving meals to Brooklynites who are most in need. The event was sponsored by American Stock Transfer, A Stein Meat Products, Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, Fairway, Fresh Direct, Flushing Bank, Health Plus Amerigroup, Investors Bank, National Grid, Salaam Club Of NY and Whole Foods. Borough President Markowitz has distributed Thanksgiving charity meals since he began his career in public service.

“Though the holidays are known as times of plenty, plenty of Brooklynites aren’t sharing in the bounty,” said Borough President Markowitz. “For many of our city’s residents, hunger is a year-round problem. Last year more than 2.6 million New Yorkers, and about one out of every three Brooklynites, had difficulty paying for the food they need. It remains important that those of us who can help open our hearts ¾ and our wallets. So as we count our blessings, we will remember to support the churches, mosques, synagogues, senior centers and other organizations throughout Brooklyn operating food pantries, kitchens and meal delivery services. Let’s keep the spirit of giving year-round and show that as Brooklynites we can count on one another. After all, it’s the Brooklyn thing to do.”
