FLEET WEEK IS HERE

FLEET WEEK IS HERE By Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger

Memorial Day is a day to commemorate and honor our brave service men and women who fight and protect to keep our country safe on a daily basis. They stand in harm’s way and risk their lives each and every day.

May 25th – June 1st is made even more special with Fleet Week in New York City. Year after year since 1984, the week has been filled with all kinds of festivities. The US Navy and Marine Corps take part in extensive military demonstrations as well as a Parade of Ships on the Hudson River to start the week off. Ship tours take place in Manhattan and Staten Island.

Times Square is the setting for a performance by the Navy Band NE and US Marine Corps Band.

All kinds of pier displays will entertain you such as the Gazzilion Bubble Show, the Coca-Cola Interactive Display, Jersey Boys Display and Mamma Mia Display. There was even a tribute to the Beatles at Pier 86.

Be captivated by the US Coast Guard Search and Rescue demonstration.

As befitting for Memorial Day itself, there will be a Memorial Day Ceremony complete with a ceremonial wreath laying, a Three Volley Salute, the unfurling of a 100-foot American Flag, singing of Taps and a fly-over of military aircraft in the missing man formation.

The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is not to be missed.

There is something for every member of the family so head on over before the ships depart the harbor. Don’t miss out. Most of the Fleet Week events are free.
