“GIANT” makes a Comeback

“GIANT” makes a Comeback By Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is bringing back a classic film for New Yorkers. As part of its Monday Nights with Oscar Series, the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International located at 111 East 59th Street will present “Giant” on September 12th at 7:00 P.M.

As a special treat, actress Carroll Baker and historian Foster Hirsch will be featured onstage in a discussion about the making of “Giant” and working with George Stevens. Baker was cast in the film as Luz Benedict II.

The original stars of the movie were all-time favorite, Rock Hudson, who played Texas rancher, Jordan ‘Bick’ Benedict and the distinguished Elizabeth Taylor, who played his Maryland socialite wife, Leslie Lynnton. It’s largely a drama focusing on such common themes as family expectations, class warfare, alcoholism, discrimination against Mexican Americans and how oil transformed Texas ranchers into greedy oil barons. The film had a star-studded cast made up of James Dean cast in his final role, Dennis Hopper, Mercedes McCambridge, Earl Holliman and Jane Withers.

Although “Giant” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, only George Stevens received the award for his directing.

This 55th anniversary screening celebrates the work and life of George Stevens. It should be an enjoyable and reminiscent evening for all that attend.

Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. You can also purchase tickets online at http://www.oscars.org or by mail. For those who end up waiting until the last minute, tickets will also be available for purchase at the box office prior to the event based on availability.
