GIVING IN THE NAME OF FASHION
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger
Fashion will always find an interested audience as it works like a torch to raise cultural collaborations with charities of all kinds.
In the month of January, Fashion For The Philippines made a huge statement all in the name of philanthropy. The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Fashion Girls for Humanity and Waves For Water teamed up with CharityBuzz to raise funds through a unique auction which benefitted hurricane relief in the Philippines. The organization assisting in these efforts is Waves For Water.
Waves For Water makes it their continuous goal to get clean water to those who need it the most. In some countries, water is a commodity that is not readily available causing many disastrous and dire situations. The startling reality is that children drink from the same water that animals bathe in. When someone is injured, if no clean water is readily available, deadly infections can be the underlying result of the shortage.
Fashion became the focus of this online auction with packages to bid on such as a chance to have ‘tea time’ with Deborah Lloyd of Kate Spade NY. Bids were placed on the chance to see a Christian Siriano fashion show. Christian always has a wildly creative approach to showing his collections. Also part of the auction were tickets to the CFDA Fashion Awards in June, an exclusive event that not everyone gets to witness firsthand. Not only could these be life-changing experiences for you with the winning bid, but you may even change the lives of others who only had a small glimmer of hope in their eyes before this auction took place.
As we look back on this fashionable platform of generosity, we look forward to the 2014 Love Heals Gala to Support AIDS Education, and on March 11, 2014, fashion moves a step into the future and takes a front row seat at the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York City. The mission of this caring organization is to empower youth to aspire to become leaders by transferring the knowledge, skills and confidence to protect themselves and their communities from HIV.
Through the common language of fashion, funds will be raised to support these ongoing efforts. It is an impressive list of honorees this year that will be recognized for their involvement and dedicated efforts. Those individuals are John Demsey, Group President of The Estee Lauder Companies and Chairman of the MAC AIDS Fund, Danielle Snyder, Co-Founder & Creative Director of DANNIJO along with Jodie Snyder, Co-Founder and CEO of DANNIJO and Bronson van Wyck, Founder of Workshop of the World and Van Wyck & Van Wyck.
There is so much more philanthropy on the horizon. We are optimistic that 2014 will bring with it open hearts, open minds and above all, an altruistic look at fashion uniting the world in the name of love and generosity.
