Even though Hurricane Irene swept through New York City, it did not dampen the spirits of a most passionate charitable event that took place recently.
Monday, August 30th, began the 2-day sporting extravaganza. It all started at the suave rooftop lounge of Dream Downtown with the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline in the distance, where Cristie Kerr kicked off the first annual Inaugural Liberty Cup Charity Golf Tournament benefitting Birdies for Breast Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Cristie herself in 2003. The guest list read like a Who’s Who in the sports and entertainment world with attendees such as basketball NBA favorite, Ray Allen. Cristie is the Vitamin Water Zero and LaCoste Ambassador so she was thrilled to be able to welcome President and CEO of LaCoste, Steve Birkhold. Also in attendance was President of Audemars Piguet, Francois-Henry Bennahmias.

This was the most opportune setting for Kerr to introduce her Curvature 2008 wine, the latest release from her high end Curvature wine collection in partnership with Pride Mountain Vineyards. The wine is in limited production and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research.
Kerr’s impassioned dedication to Birdie’s for Breast Cancer Foundation is largely attributed to the death of her mother in 2003 who battled the harrowing disease. To date, the foundation has raised $1M for breast cancer organizations which includes the founding of the Cristie Kerr Women’s Health Center at Jersey City Medical Center.
The Liberty Cup Tournament took place on Day 2 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Expert golfers took to the 18-hole golf course to challenge their expertise with celebrity participants such as Kyle MacLachlan of Sex and the City fame, dreamy Matthew Settle from the popular CW show Gossip Girl and American Idol contestant, Michael Johns. It was definitely a full schedule with the championship being followed by a cocktail reception, auction, awards gala and another strategic tournament – Caesar’s Poker Tournament. A portion of the funds raised went to support the Women’s Health Center established in Cristie’s name.

Cristie’s outstanding commitment and perseverance to such a worthwhile cause is very admirable. Her love of golfing and avid respect from others has made her zealous dream become a reality. Hats off to Cristie!
