New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013 brought with it not only the latest fresh collections from designers whose names splash the pages of every glossy publication that hits the newsstands but also emerging designers that are making it up the ranks with their inspired drive for design and imaginative ways.

On Sunday, September 9, 2012, in a roomy warehouse at Pier 57 just south of the Chelsea Piers sport complex on the Hudson River in New York City, a very modernistic collection took shape and drew in crowds of media and industry professionals as well as very excited fans, followers and believers of dreams made into reality.  It was a sunny day full of optimism, just the right atmosphere for a fashion presentation to unfold.

Earlier this year, a reality competition show bringing to viewers the concept of fashion design discovery took place on NBC Television and it was called ‘Fashion Star’.  It was the emergence of the next top designer by three large well-known retailers and an expert panel of judges including Nicole Richie.  Fourteen design hopefuls vied for the winning title.  The final episode brought us a new visionary in the world of fashion.  Kara Laricks, teacher gone designer, New York resident and Academy of Art University graduate, had her life transformed forever on that magical evening.

Being the winner and being gifted with talent of expression brought Kara to this particular location on this particular day in September, eager to show her first major collection.

The Spring/Summer 2013 Presentation of Kara Laricks picked up with a bit of menswear influences visible in the clothing especially in the use of tux tails and we were reminded in some of the looks of one of Kara’s favorite designers, Jil Sander.  The family of colors stayed true to her style with black, white and red but we did notice some yellow and orange pieces co-mingled within.

The inspiration behind this collection was the late 1920’s/early 1930’s Japanese matchbox covers.  It is an androgynous line with tuxedo tails and lingerie details.  Some of the pieces that stood out were the tux tail romper in black tropical weight gabardine with soft yellow charmeuse lining and the tux blouse in ivory silk with cotton shirting and reverse charmeuse collar detail paired with the matchbox ankle pant in navy tropical weight rayon blend gabardine.  The bowtie shirt and the cumberbund pant were transformed on the model into a pleasing wardrobe addition to any woman’s closet for the spring/summer season.

Bold red tights accessorized Kara’s version of the little black sheath dress and brought it to life.  A simple black slip dress was nowhere near ordinary but most definitely a knockout.

Some of the more dressy fashions with a luxurious contemporary feel to them were the cumberbund cocktail dress in raw-edged heirloom organza/silk charmeuse and the collared gown in raw-edged ivory organza with ivory silk charmeuse slip.

Every piece in the collection took on its own personality and models mimicked androgyny with mens’ hair styles and very darkly painted lips.

It was evident that Kara Laricks put her heart and soul into this Spring/Summer 2013 collection and is so thankful for the friends and family that surround her with love and support and made this presentation happen.  We just know that more great collections are in her future and we will see Laricks at New York Fashion Week in February.
