There is a new thriller due out in theaters this Friday, October 21st and it is called ‘Margin Call’. The plot is one that many will easily be able to relate to in our current economic environment. Boasting an all-star cast, the movie is sure to attract large crowds and receive rave reviews. It is inspired by real events. Some of the talented cast members include Kevin Spacey, Stanley Tucci, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Penn Badgley and Zachary Quinto.
The story takes place in the financial jungle of New York City. The true meaning of ‘margin call’ is a broker’s demand on an investor using margin to deposit additional money or securities so that the margin account is brought up to the minimum maintenance margin. Imagine the true meaning and what type of plot breaks loose in this action-packed film.
The setting is a Wall Street investment firm and the date is 2008. To the dismay of the employees, many are about to be let go. Stanley Tucci’s character, a risk-management executive loyal to the company, has the misfortune of being one of those employees. He leaves one small item, a thumb drive filled with life-changing information, with an entry-level analyst. That thumb drive will make its recipients the masters of their destiny as well as the destiny of others. This could take the entire firm down and we are off on a 24 hour roller-coaster ride that will affect not only the financial aspect of the lives of those involved but also question their morals and values.
The investment world could be turned upside down in a very short period of time. The firm must redeem themselves by dumping their now worthless holdings on a market that is totally unaware. Each of the members of the firm could pocket millions and walk away.
Entertainment Weekly gives this film an A-. It has also received The Creative Coalition’s 2011 Spotlight Initiative Award during the Sundance Film Festival.
It may hit very close to home and there is no doubt that it will have you on the edge of your seat and sweep you into the maze. ‘Remember the Day. Something Big is Going Down’.
