There is much to be seen at holiday time such as the Museum’s Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Creche. The statuesque 20-foot Blue Spruce tree lights up not only the room but every child’s face as they stare up at the massive giant decorated in 18th-century angels, cherubs and guarding a Nativity scene all located in the Museum’s Medieval Sculpture Hall.
No matter what your taste may be, there is something special for everyone within the expansive corridors and rooms of this great building. A new exhibit was recently added on December 18th and continues running until June 30,2013. Feast your eyes on the rare Italian stringed instruments from the Sau-Wing Lam Collection. The opening date coincided with the 275th anniversary of the death of Antonio Stradivari.
There is a very special exhibition located in the Michael C. Rockefeller Special Exhibition Gallery for all to explore. It highlights the African works acquired by the New York Avant-Garde and its most influential patrons during the 1910’s and 1920’s and tells the story of how African artifacts were first recognized as art in the United States. This fascinating exhibition is made possible by the Friends of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. Take part in the journey through April 14, 2013.
The year 2013 will bring with it some very different views as Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity On View move to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on February 26, 2013 and it runs until May 27th. This exhibit will present a revealing look at the role of fashion in the works of the Impressionists and their contemporaries. Delight in over 80 major figure paintings, seen in concert with period costumes, accessories, fashion plates, photographs and popular prints. You will discover the vital relationship between fashion and art during the pivotal years, from the mid-1860’s to the mid-1880’s and then you will understand how Paris emerged as the fashion capital of the world.
Some of the other Spring Exhibits not to be missed include Sleeping Eros, Birds in the Art of Japan, Photography & the American Civil War, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, Making the Invisible Visible and so many other fanciful presentations.
