Oscar Chorus By Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger

New Yorkers will have a special place at the Oscar’s this evening. Public School 22 in Staten Island will have their very best fifth grade chorus singing tonight at the Oscar event.
This journey began years ago with Gregg Breinberg, the 38 year old music teacher who is responsible for this dream come true. He would create videos of his fifth graders performing hits of Lady Gaga, Fleetwood Mac and more and upload the videos to YOU TUBE for the world to view and enjoy. These videos caught the attention of celebrities such as Paris Hilton who realized how talented the kids were.
Since they were discovered on the Internet, the chorus has performed at the White House Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, on the ‘Oprah Winfrey Show’ as well as many other high-profile venue events.
This group of kids attending and singing at the event tonight are extremely excited. For many of them, they have never been on an airplane or even traveled out of New York City. They will be staying at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood and will be lucky enough to get close to some of the biggest stars whom they never imagined they would meet or sing for. Breinberg is just as elated as his students and sometimes has to pinch himself to make sure this is reality.
Some of these children come from families that are going through rough times economically. Some of the children have a difficult time expressing themselves but through their singing they can release their inner feelings. “Are they nervous?” “Of course not!” They are ready to make a lasting impression and word has it that they will be doing a heartwarming rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’. So stay tuned for what is sure to be a great show!
