A PETITE PARADE OF FASHION WITH BONNIE YOUNG
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger Photographer: George Whylie Videographer: Maxine NolanThe cameras were out on Sunday, March 10, 2013, to snap pictures of pretty petites walking the runway at the Bonnie Young Fall/Winter 2013 Fashion Show at Industria Super Studio in New York City.
Bonnie’s creative abilities are what brings each collection their magical success proving that even little ones love fashion. Bonnie Young established her brand in 2006 while she was Senior Creative Director of Donna Karan Collection, a position she held for 16 years. Bonnie has branched out into designing for all ages. She opened her own store for children’s luxury and couture in 2007 in Aspen, Colorado. In 2011, Bonnie moved into the world of women’s couture and ready-to-wear, collaborating with Henry Beguelin. Her collections are widely loved and she has been featured in international publications, on television and can be seen on the web as a highly-respected and very talented designer.
This latest Fall/Winter 2013 Collection was all part of a larger event known as ‘Vogue Bambini’s Petite Parade’ which draws an enthusiastic crowd including celebrity stylist, June Ambrose, socialite Yvonne Force Villareal, photographer Luca Babini and actress Fatima Ptacek, voice of children’s favorite cartoon character known as Dora the Explorer. Fatima also starred in the Oscar award-winning short film, Curfew. She is such a huge fan of Young that she even walked the runway as a model in the show.
A collection filled with autumn colors and a focus on femininity has us simply in awe. The collection was inspired by the portrait of Frida Kahlo. Frida was a famous Mexican self-portrait artist who was married to Diego Rivera and became a feminist icon of her time. Young became almost obsessed with the portrait and the artist herself as she gazed at the strong features that shaped her beauty. Thick eyebrows and the way that she wore flowers in her hair gave Frida incredible inner strength and an almost stoic power with her presence.
Flowers could be seen on many of the pieces of the runway and in the models’ side-swept hair. The flowers were far from typical. They were made from cork, rich velvets and of non-ordinary colors. While appearing to have a pragmatic innocence, the collection also signified feminine strength. Bonnie focused on the ‘tweens’, the older girl that is going from a teenager to an inquisitive woman and growing into her own unique personality. It is a generation that has incredible confidence, wisdom and strength. Her daughter, Celia, along with her daughter’s friends, continue to fuel Bonnie’s artistic vision for each of her collections.
This collection was a blend of floral jacquards, silks, suedes, denims and floral embroideries that came forth in a contemporary way. Belted dresses, shifts brightened with an array of blooming flowers and petticoat dressing which was precious brought out the young girl in all of us. Fall would not be complete without the leather jacket and little boys all suited up.
This year Bonnie Young will debut the showing of her first women’s collection. In addition to designing, Bonnie is the founder of Fashion Fights for Children’s Rights, an initiative that aligns her brand with various children’s charities.
It was a delightful afternoon and loyal fashionable followers of all ages walked away with big smiles and a wish list of Bonnie Young pieces for their own Fall 2013 wardrobe.
