A PINK SAND BEACH AWAITS YOU
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger Photographer: George Whylie Videographer: Maxine NolanWith Memorial Day soon upon us, its time to plan that special vacation that will whisk you away to a haven of relaxation and wonderment.
I know just the place to sweep your cares away. Not far from the Florida coastline is an island beyond compare. Pink Sands Beach, Bahamas is a breathtaking destination of natural beauty, clear blue ocean for miles and miles, elegant resorts and of course, three miles of gorgeous pink sands that stretch beyond the horizon. The ocean is like your own private bathtub protected by a cascading coral reef.
It is a small yet friendly island where the streets are lined with hibiscus and native flowers and you can almost walk the entire circumference.
Dine with the locals at one of the bayside restaurants and sip on champagne as the sun goes down and provides you with a most memorable sunset beyond compare.
Even though the island provides an extremely peaceful atmosphere, there is still plenty to occupy your days. Go snorkeling, go diving, take a walking tour, visit a straw market, go fishing and catch your dinner cooked to perfection the way you desire, or just go down to the beach and sunbathe until your heart is content.
Pink Sands Beach is known for some of the best cracked conch anywhere in the Bahamas. Dip it in a small portion of lemon juice and it will have you craving more. Some of the island specialties include conch chowder, conch salad, chicken pot pie and conch burgers. Believe it or not, after a steamy day at the beach, a cold bowl of ice cream from Angela’s Starfish Restaurant will hit the spot and remedy the need.
One of the most world famous dives is ‘Current Cut’, a drift dive in Eleuthera, just a boat’s ride away from Pink Sands. You hold on to your buddy and jump in and then let the high velocity current push you past large coral heads and colorful filter feeders with little or no effort on your part. You can do it again and again on one tank of air or nitrox as the dive boat will pick you right up as you exit the tidal channel. If you are a wreck diver, ‘The Devil’s Backbone’ is off Spanish Wells which is very close. There are a few ships and at least one train that is 30 feet below the surface.
If you are accustomed to the nightlife scene, Seagrapes on Colebrook Street will keep you dancing and shaking to live Bahamian music. If you want to follow the locals, head to Vic-Hum Club and throw down some tasty rum punch.
There are a variety of lodging accommodations that will keep you comfortable at reasonable prices. Whether it is a motel, villa or cottage, your needs are sure to be met efficiently. The Pink Sands Resort is world famous and lures celebrities to its prime location on the beach and away from the crowds.
Planes leave every day from Miami and even from Nassau, Bahamas and you fly away to the North Eleuthera Airstrip. From there you will taxi to the ferry dock where a boat will transport you to your final destination within a matter of minutes.
This is the closest to Utopia that you can get and if you are searching for that last minute vacation spot, this is surely the answer. You won’t be disappointed.
