The Race Continues – Romney vs Santorum
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger Photographer: George Whylie Videographer: Maxine NolanCould Mitt Romney be pulling ahead of the rest of his contenders? It depends who you decide to ask.
With an overwhelming victory in Illinois, Romney gained the delegate advantage in the fight for the final nomination. With 54 delegates in total, Romney won 41 and Rick Santorum won 10. Once again, the economy seems to be the largest issue at hand with 58% of the voters claiming that this is their biggest concern.
The significance of this win is that Illinois is President Barack Obama’s adopted home state and will this be any indication that Romney could clinch the win against Obama in the final election?
At the present time, Romney holds 485 delegates, Santorum holds 193 delegates, Gingrich holds 137 delegates and Paul is trailing behind with 34. Although Romney is a far stretch ahead of the rest, Santorum still has hopes and Gingrich just isn’t ready to throw up the red flag just yet.
It has also been announced that Romney has been endorsed by GOP House Leader, Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). McCarthy will act as the California statewide chair for Romney’s campaign. McCarthy feels that “Republicans need to unite and work together to take back the White House and put in place policies that will get the nation back on a path to prosperity by reducing taxes, shrinking government and empowering the private sector.”
Puerto Rico was an easy win for Romney last week as he won 20 delegates to Santorum’s none. However, Santorum was the overwhelming victor in Louisiana last weekend; 49% to Romney’s 27%.
The next states in the mix are Wisconsin, Maryland and then on to Washington, D.C.
