“THE HUNGER GAMES” -AT THE TOP
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger Photographer: George Whylie Videographer: Maxine NolanLast Friday, the internet was buzzing and theaters were packed for the opening night of the epic movie, “The Hunger Games”.
In their wildest dreams, nobody would have even imagined that this film would draw a large enough crowd to make it the most successful movie on opening weekend that was not a sequel, prequel or remake. It grossed $152.5 million in the first weekend alone. “The Hunger Games” was right at the top with “Harry Potter” and the loyal fans that also flocked to see this masterful series.
Just like “Harry Potter”, this movie began as a book and continued as a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins originally published in 2008 and continuing with books for two more years and they in turn became best sellers.
The movie not only combines suspense, action and intrigue, but also is a bit of a love story so the appeal is for both men and women. The extremely talented and well-seasoned cast of Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth, keep you on the edge of your seat at all times.
We find ourselves in a fictional country known as Panem which is broken up into 12 districts following a war that wiped out the former nation. A young boy and girl (between the ages of 12 and 18) are chosen to take part in an annual and televised fight to the death. This fight is known as “The Hunger Games”. Of course, every movie has a hero and a heroine to make the story even more enticing. This movie gives audiences everything they wish to see and experience in a thrilling setting.
It certainly helps that the three young stars are definitely part of the beautiful crowd. They are quickly becoming teen heartthrobs and have been seen on the ‘Red Carpet’, in style magazines and plastered on the pages of celebrity magazines. Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss and thus is the perfect role model for young girls. She is thoughtful, smart, loyal and the ultimate athlete.
It seems that the recent best-selling movies of “Harry Potter”, “Twilight” and now “The Hunger Games” all began with one book that branched into a series and the concept sold into a movie with a dreamy cast and excitement to match.
Unquestionably, the movie itself has made Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation an overnight success.
We are almost positive that this is not the last that we will see of “The Hunger Games”. Is there a sequel in the works? Fans will be patiently waiting……..
