THE REVIVAL OF ‘THE SOUND OF MUSIC’

For the young at heart and the old of soul, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will delight audiences with the presentation of “The Sound of Music” as the fourth film in the series “The Last 70mm Film Festival” entertains film fanatics.  The showing will take place on Monday, July 30th at 7:00 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

For fans of the classic film, Kym Karath,the actress who played Gretl, the youngest of the seven Von Trapp children, will be on hand to view the film.

This movie was a sure charmer in its day and over the decades with everyone’s favorite, Julie Andrews, playing the lead role as a woman who departs her Austrian convent to become the governess of seven children.  The father of the clan was played by the famous Christopher Plummer.    Julie Andrews was nominated for an Oscar in this role.  The movie itself was nominated for ten Academy Awards which included Actress, Actress in a Supporting Role, Art Direction-Color, Set Direction, Cinematography-Color, Costume Design and Color.  Awards were presented for Directing, Film Editing, Music-Scoring of Music-Adaptation or Treatment, Best Picture and Sound.

Hands down it was one of the most successful films of its era.

On August 13th – “Spartacus” (1960)

Since tickets are sold out at this time, a standby line will form on the day of the event and standby numbers will be assigned beginning at 5:30 p.m.  Available tickets will be distributed shortly before the film begins.  Ticket holders should arrive at least 15 minutes early.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.  For more information, go to www.oscars.org or call (310) 247-3600.
