The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 2012 Student Academy Awards Competition is now underway.

The students of today have fresh new ideas and innovative approaches to filmmaking. The Student Academy Awards were established in 1972 by the Academy to promote, encourage and support filmmaking at a collegiate level.

Gold, silver and bronze medal awards will be presented to student filmmakers along with cash prizes in the categories of Alternative, Animation, Narrative, Documentary and Foreign Student Film. This is only the beginning and some past winners have gone as far as winning Oscar nominations in the future. This past year, 2010 Student Academy Award winner, Luke Matheny took home an Oscar for his live action short film, ‘God of Love’ and both Tanei Toom and John Lasseter were Oscar nominees and also past Student Academy Award winners.

The rules state that the competition is open to full-time college and university students at accredited schools. The films must be made within the curricular structure of a film program or class at their respective school. Entries must be received by April 2, 2012.

In the Foreign Student Film Category, entries will only be accepted from full-time students attending schools that are members of the International Film School Organization known as CILECT (CILECT)and outside of the United States. Deadline for submittal is Friday, March 23, 2012.

The Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California.

Rules and online application are available at Student Academy Awards.
