The thundering annual ING New York City Marathon is right around the corner. The event takes place on Sunday, November 6th, 2011, in New York City and millions of runners hit the streets to participate in one of the largest marathons in the country.

There are many charities that receive contributions through the online platform and offline efforts. This year’s goal is $26.2 million with an amount of $3.5 million raised to date.

One of the motivated runners this year will be Christy Turlington Burns who is raising money for her non-profit organization, Every Mother Counts. She founded this campaign in 2010 in order to increase public awareness of and support for improved maternal and child health. The startling reality is that for each of the 16,000 females runners that participated in the marathon last year, two times that number of women die due to childbirth related causes each month.

Christy has put together a team of ten that will run the marathon. They are friends and fellow advocates. They include Heather Armstrong, Writer and Creator, Dooce, and Advisor of EMC’s Technology and Media, Julie Smolyansky, CEO of Lifeway Foods, Carlos Quirarte, co-owner of The Smile and Erin Thornton, Executive Director of Every Mother Counts. The team has set a goal for themselves of $50,000 which is double the amount that ING requires.

Turlington Burns is on a strict training regimen which requires much carb-loading and she is eagerly preparing for the big day.

Get ready, get set, go!!
