Today is a day that we give thanks to all our service personnel for their dedicated efforts to making our country safe.

It is a day to look back at the veterans who have served our country throughout many years of war and strife. It is a time of remembrance for the heroes who give us pride and who have represented our country well over the decades.

Originally known as Armistice Day, it truly marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Federal workers have the day off, free meals for veterans are offered in many fast food and casual dinner restaurant chains and parades take place in celebration of this special day in cities across the country.

This year’s Veterans Day is celebrated with an even greater tribute knowing that we are bringing home thousands of servicemen and women from Iraq and Afghanistan very soon.

President Obama appeared today at Arlington National Cemetery. He is quoted as saying, “The tide of war is receding. My fellow Americans, our troops are coming home”. He placed a floral wreath on the Tomb of the Unknowns as is customary on this day.

Every American should make a pledge to find some way to support our U.S. troops.

Many families will have a homecoming like none other this holiday season. Today, celebrating Veterans Day, it is definitely a day to look back but also a day to look forward to the future and welcome our veterans home with open arms and gratitude and try to provide them with employment opportunities. Thank them for their tireless commitment to our country.

Veterans Day should give each of us a sense of pride in America and all that we stand for.
