BUNNY (Velvet Voice) BROWN
The man with the velvet voice, singer extraordinaire Joel âBunnyâ Brown has been involved in the music business since 1972. Bunny first started singing in the church at age 9 in the junior choir and this lit a thirst for performing that is still burning bright. He continued in the church and school choir and he became a member of âThe Falcons Bandâ. As the lead vocalist he introduced Dennis Brown as another vocalist, who became the Crown Price of Reggae.
Bunny went on to form a vocal and dance group called The Chosen Few with Errol Brown, Franklyn Spence and Richard McDonald.

The Chosen Few became one of the most enduring (and enduringly popular) reggae groups of the 1970s, the Chosen Few not only had an enviable string of hits across the decade but also toured the United States, Canada, and England. They were known for their superbly crafted vocals and also for putting on a dazzling show.
Promoter/producer Derrick Harriott produced a hit album with the group titled âHit After Hitâ with five number one singles: âEbony Eyesâ, âYouâre A Big Girl Nowâ, âShaftâ, âQueen Majestyâ and âEverybody Plays the Foolâ. Bunny Brown was the lead vocalist on all of these singles except âShaftâ.
Following this success, the group went on tour to Toronto and then migrated to England where they were signed to Polydor Records, managed by Tony Gordon (who also managed Boy George& Culture Club as well as Lulu). The group toured for Polydor with the Fatback Band and Gloria Gaynor as well as on solo engagements. With Polydor the group produced two chart hits, âYou Mean Everything To meâ and âI can Make Your Dreams Come Trueâ. Eventually the group moved from Polydor to Hansa Records in West Berlin Germany, which also had on their label, Donna Summer, Boney M, Eruption, Ami Stewart, all massively successful in the 1970s.
The group was produced by Pete Biloti and George Morodeo, the producers of Donna Summer. The group continued touring Europe with acts like Billy Ocean, Joan Armatrading, âQueenâ, the legendary rock opera group.
While with Chosen Few, Bunny established himself as a session vocalist working with the best of the best in pop, rock, R&B and reggae. He sang on recordings for Manfred Mann, Boney M, Ami Stewart, Links and the Rod Temperton lead Heatwave. Bunny also recorded âStrawberry Letter 23â as a solo artiste. This recording went to the Top 30 on the British Charts. It was following this success with EMI Records, that Bunny was featured in the Village Voice and went to America to promote the single.
While in America Bunny Brown toured with Heatwave, performing with Earth, Wind & Fire, The OâJays, Billy Joel, Evelyn âChampagneâ King and Yoko Ono. In the studio he worked with Luther Van Dross (recording commercial jingles), Curtis Blow, The Main Ingredients, Lisa Fisher and Manhattan Transferâs Kenwood Dennard and Delmar Brown. He also recorded an album âFunky Weekendâ produced by Tony Sylvester of the Main Ingredients which was never released because of contractual agreements.
In 1990 Bunny established his own label and production company â Joelâs Ark. Bunny continued to tour and record, and also worked as a producer and arranger. He toured with âElectric Avenueâ and âLiving On the Frontlineâ star, Eddie Grant as well as on solo concerts.
In 2003, Bunny was offered a production deal by Sir Coxsone Dodd of Studio One and returned to Jamaica (moving from Atlanta his base for some years and where he introduced Reggae to rapper âLittle Johnâ) to record the album, âReady For The Worldâ.
