Designers and their Models

Designers and their Models, By Hope Wilkos The South Florida Blogger, As we are quickly approaching Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Week in New York City, designers are preparing to ‘wow’ us with their fresh new collections.
Choosing the proper model to portray the image of the particular collection is quite an enormous task.
Over the years, designers have gone through some amazing transformations on the type of models chosen to do their runway shows.
The 1990’s launched the faces of our favorite supermodels.

Linda Evangelista with her many lovely diversified looks became the face of Versace, Donna Karan, Jill Sander and Ralph Lauren. She has since become an activist for MAC’s Viva Glam campaign for HIV/AIDS Research.

Christy Turlington is the all-American beauty whose dark hair and beautiful smile gained her the coveted title of the face of Missoni, Chanel and Burberry’s 1993 Fall Ad campaign. She became known as ‘The Face of the 20th Century’. She has since turned activist for SmokingIsUgly.com as well as editor for Marie Claire Magazine and is a Restauranteur.

Naomi Campbell is the bad girl of the group. Her fashionable good looks put her on many a Vogue cover as well as earning her the face of Ralph Lauren. She turned activist for Operation Smile in 2007.

Claudia Schiffer is the German blond bombshell who modeled for many a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and was awarded the face of Chanel.

All of these supermodels collaborated to open the Fashion Cafe in Rockefeller Center in New York City as a joint venture in 1995.

As the years slipped by, the designers went from the well-known supermodels to the unknown waifs. The expressionless faces of these waifs became the look of the moment. Kate Moss was the perfect representation as this particular look unfolded and her popularity in the designer world skyrocketed.

Today there are many rising stars with a new and unique look.

Emily DiDonato has lovely big blue eyes and long lashes with a smile to match. She has modeled for Ralph Lauren, Rag and Bone and Calvin Klein to name a few.

Alla Kostromicheva hails from the Ukraine with a young and innocent appearance. She was widely seen in 2008 in Christian Dior, Emanuel Ungaro and Yves Saint Laurent shows in Paris. She became the face of Bottega Veneta in 2010.
Edie Campbell is a new British addition to the modeling world with the Sonia Rykiel and Chanel shows to her credits.

Let’s not forget the men. Nicolas Ripoll represents Argentina as the face of Sisley and appeared in the Spring Dolce and Gabbana and Prada shows in Milan and Paris in June of 2010.

We cannot forget the newcomers to the modeling world.

Julia Saner is the Swiss sweetie who has already walked the runway for the Spring Gucci show as well as Fendi, Valentino and Alexander McQueen. Ella Drake is relatively new to the business but her career highlights now include Gucci and Issey Miyake shows. These girls are only a couple of the young models who have the potential to climb the ladder of success and reach the top.

We are anxiously awaiting the Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Week shows in a few weeks to see the faces that will grace the designer runways. There is such a wide array of young stars to choose from. Who will be the next rising star?
