History
Over the years, there have been various cultural movements, societal changes, and most importantly, the rise and fall of varying styles of Reggae music. Standing tall as a pioneering roots festival, Tony Rebel has managed to build and maintain a product that aims to promote and preserve the healthier aspect of Reggae music that has further assisted in nation-building. As a result, Rebel Salute has captured the adoration of roots reggae lovers worldwide; magnetically pulling thousands of people to areas of Jamaica’s South Coast not traditionally famous for live music festivals. Since January 2013, the Rebel Salute festival moved to the Richmond Estate in St. Ann. Sporting a new two day format and a new venue the festival unsurprisingly got off to an auspicious start and received a strong turnout.

The success of such an authentic production could have predicted from its inception in 1994 where an over-populated, entertainment complex was marked by horrendous rainfall and the determination of Saluters to remain regardless of the situation. Thereafter, Rebel Salute has been able to claim countless moments worth remembering for sheer entertainment value: from the rain-dominated event of 1994; to the two (2) hours of Black Magic from Jimmy Cliff in 2005; Third World and Inner Circle in 2006; the subversive Rastafarian chants of Steel Pulse in 2010; the rebirth of Movado in 2011; the explosive performances of Stephen Marley and Damian Marley in 2012; to the masterful performance of lover’s rock royalty Beres Hammond and the return of Aswad and Shinehead in 2013.

Jamaica has now fully embraced Rebel Salute as it is commonly called the bassline of Jamaica’s musical calendar. Hailed today as a spiritual renaissance, it has become the bedrock for the exposure and celebration of Jamaican roots music. As the first cultural event for the New Year, the showcase has become a very proud process of reclaiming the moral high ground once occupied by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and among many others.
Rebel Salute has assisted extensively in the development of Jamaica’s South Coast as a natural attraction and as of 2013 has now embarked on not only highlighting other areas in St. Ann that form part of the chains of Attraction but also developing them. Tourists form a huge percentage of the patrons at Rebel Salute and it’s no secret that they look forward to the beaches in the surrounding areas, attractions, restaurants and the available accommodations. Community tourism is also an important aspect of the production. Even the regular homeowners benefit as they too, rent their homes to tourists and provide excellent Jamaican dishes for them.
Having aided greatly in the development of South Coast tourism, Rebel Salute now aims to extend its brand of wholesome entertainment, and its ability to attract masses to the North Coast. It is undisputable that the 20th staging of the event did just that. Its authenticity, as in the past, has attracted many to the new location and has increased the level of tourism in the parish.
Rebel Salute will now take advantage of its unique position to lift up and support other artistic disciplines such as visual and dramatic arts. The event will also expand the experience to include more focus on the local cuisines present.
Nothing can be more symbolic of Jamaica’s cultural legacy than a resounding clash between the heart and the mind; “when the music hits, you feel no pain”.
