TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL SOON TO SHINE
By: Hope Wilkos, Writer/Blogger
Breaking away from our own reality and entering the realm of fantasy, emotional retribution, happiness, drama and dreams are all part of one of the most highly-accredited film festivals in the world. This is one of the passionate projects of the very talented Robert De Niro and it is known as the Tribeca Film Festival. De Niro, one of the founders of the festival, continues to take an active role every year. It was created back in 2002 to revitalize the area of New York City known as Tribeca which was just one of the hard hit communities of the 9/11 devastating attack on the World Trade Center. This year, Communication Giant AT&T will become the presenting sponsor taking over from American Express and continuing to bridge the cultural divide. AT&T will celebrate its new involvement with a day of free screenings that are open to the public. The company will also sponsor the Tribeca Drive-In series, a fan-favorite string of outdoor screenings of classic movies along the Hudson River. Unsurprisingly, new technology will also be added to the festival experience — a hackathon and the Tribeca Disruption Innovation Awards will both play a bigger role at this year’s event.
Each year a wealth of talent makes their directorial debut along with emerging actors and screenwriters. A good many of these artists go on to win the coveted Oscar Award for their dedication and hard work. The main mission of Tribeca Film Festival is “to enable the international film community and the general public to experience the power of film by redefining the film festival experience.” New York City is promoted as a major filmmaking center. This year, over a period of 12 enthralling days, April 16-April 27th, 2014, we will view some of the greatest independent films including documentaries, narrative features and shorts which will be debuting for the very first time and sure to not be the last time we see them on the big screen.
Stimulating panel discussions will also be part of the activities with experts from the entertainment industry giving their insight and opinion on a variety of topics vital to the film industry.
The magic that the Tribeca Film Festival carries with it is not only limited to once a year. All throughout the year, Tribeca Film has created an outlet to form partnerships with national media outlets so that independent cinema becomes ever more widely recognized as time goes on. They highlight films during the entire year giving film enthusiasts a place to visit to gain updated information.
Being that 2014 marks the 12 year anniversary of the festival, we are already anticipating what is in store for fans. We can feel the fervor in the air as Tribeca gears up for what promises to be the best year yet. The official film submission date was November 29, 2013 with late deadline being December 27, 2013. Now the review process begins to determine which films will have that enormous opportunity to shine.
We had some impressive winners in all categories for 2013 and audiences continue to rave about their experiences at Tribeca Film Festival. The talent will shine even brighter in 2014, of that we are sure. With this evening’s list of Golden Globe nominees up for Best Motion Picture – Drama, it is a testament that film festivals, such as Tribeca Film Festival, discover ripe talent waiting for the world to accept and savor in their creativity.
These are some of the examples that prove the theory. ’12 Years A Slave’ had its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in 2013. ‘Rush’ had its premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. ‘Philomena’ also premiered at this festival and was awarded People’s Choice Runner-Up prize. ‘Gravity’ opened the 70th Venice International Film Festival in August 2013 and then went on to be seen at the Telluride Film Festival shortly thereafter. ‘Captain Phillips’ premiered at the 2013 New York Film Festival. In the category of Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, ‘Her’ premiered at the New York Film Festival as well. ‘Nebraska’ premiered at the Cannes Film Festival along with ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’, a film that won the Grand Prix award.
