THE PRESIDENTS CLUB

Five Presidents, made up of both Democrats and Republicans, came together on a bright and sunny Dallas day this past Thursday, April 26, 2013.
This exclusive Presidents Club had one main purpose in mind and that was the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum on the campus of Southern Methodist University. Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama all lined up on the same platform exemplifying the power of accomplishment and conviction and dedication to their beliefs.
All five men put aside differences to commemorate this new library and museum that will serve the American public in educational ways and teach this country about its history. We have only witnessed a handful of times when various presidents have come together at an event.
In attendance were former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. Members of the large Bush family came out as well as former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.
Jimmy Carter recognized George W. Bush’s efforts in bringing about a peace treaty in South Sudan and increasing the funding for AIDS prevention and treatment in Africa.
Bill Clinton recounted some of the more humorous discussions he had with the former president during his term.
Although very frail and in a wheelchair, the elder George H.W. Bush rose from his wheelchair to proclaim to the audience how proud he was of his son, the 43rd President of the United States.
President Obama remarked that this was an event to honor the life and legacy of the 43rd President of the United States. “It is a special day for democracy,” he proclaimed. He had many fine words for Bush and admiration for his character. The job of President is humbling and not easy by any means. There are many challenges and you have to stand up for what you believe. He was honored to be a part of this very special day of celebration.
The honoree himself took to the podium and said, “elected officials must serve a cause greater than themselves, defined by the convictions that they hold.” He explained his one overwhelming guiding principle was this, “the United States of America must strive to expand the reach of freedom.” He gave thanks to his father and his Vice President and at times we were able to witness his emotional and human side.
He ended his speech with, “Whatever challenges come before us, I will always believe our nation’s best days lie ahead.”
All five men share a deep conviction and agreed that there is abundant history in this new building that also may raise new criticism and questions over the Iraq War and the policies after the events of September 11th. This Center will show how the horrific terrorist attacks of that day changed our country forever.
The Presidential Center will also include the George W. Bush Institute, a public policy institute and is located in Dallas, Texas.
